Yet another Hind? I know, I know: at least two other building reports already exist on this forum and I have already seen a level of perfection there that I will never be able to compete with, but... those who followed my Dauntless thread know that the Hind had been planned by me long before it had even be issued.
As you can see, I am in the very early stages of building the Hind; my intention is to provide you with pictures of every single step - a bit like I did with the Dauntless and earlier models, and discuss all the issues that will arise during this build. At the same time I will of course follow closely the other reports. Already Ober Freak's warning about the missing slots in W1** and the W1f**/W1t** problem helped me a lot!

Hehe another Hind or should i say the flying counterpart of Bismarck
Have fun with your building, and don't be concerned about perfection, it's a Halinski: hit the line and you'll be perfect for at least 99.9%
Marco
PS: Should be time to post some of my progress

... at least two other building reports already exist on this forum and I have already seen a level of perfection there that I will never be able to compete with...Hi JC
nice try, but you are the same perfect then the other builders, don´t be shy.
Í´d like to see the progress on your build , also from Marco.
So, keep on doing/ glueing.Regards
Robi -
Good luck in the construction. And I'll watch it.
-
Thank you Brzdic1, Robi and Ober Freak, for your comments.
I continued working on the frame. I think that gluing parts together by simply following the part numbers is not a good advise here: W1j** is indeed the lower part of bulkhead W1k** and W1l**, but it must attached together with W1b**, W1c** and W1d** before fixing parts W1e* to the underside of floor W1**/W1a.
-
The frame that supports the cockpit floor (first picture), the floor in place (second picture) and the first cockpit wall/instument panel in place:
p.s.: Is it correct that there is no part W1v? (I ask this because W1w* does exist).
-
Hi JC, I am sure you are checking the Halinski website for errata, they are good about 'fessing up to any errors. Off to a great start!
-
I will keep an eye on that site of course, Royaloakmin!
I added the front bulkhead (between the pilot and the gunner compartment). A view towards the rear (picture nr. 2) shows the typical asymmetrical fuselage design, with the helicopter leaning towards the right as if it had a flat right tire; the introduction to the building instructions was very helpful on this issue. The front view diagram, when studied carefully, shows the same effect (picture nr.3).
-
Compare Your front view diagram with this pictures,
take care of the wheels, I think this will be an extra chellangeGREAT WORK!
-
Pffff...that tire could use some air....
I started working at a whole series of cabin interior fittings:
-
Calmly, and working at my own pace I am continuing the construction of the cabin interior, taking good care to compare the distances between the upper tabs of the side walls and those between the slots of the roof part W4a that will one of the next in the row otherwise I might be in for a surprise
-
Today I added the bulkhead plus the details belonging to it at the rear of the cabin; but first I did what my predecessors advised me to do before starting the construction of the seats and the roof portion of the cabin: since everything is still accessible at this stage I mounted the oxygen cylinder, the axe, fire extinguisher and other details to the cabin walls:
-
Although I could hardly find any time to work on the Hind recently, I managed to assemble the two sets of benches with place for a total of eight men personnel. For these benches, not less than four sizes of wire are needed: 0,6, 0,8, 1,0 and 1,2 mm.
In the polish instructions it is said that the front set of benches is hardly used in the real thing and that therefore it might as well be skipped. But I want my cabin to be well filled, so for once I did not follow their advise. -
Hi, jcvandenbergh
good decision about the benches.
Nice built!Regards,
Sergey -
Hi theppf, nice to see you follow the Hind build!
I was not really happy with the design of the ceiling parts 6a-6e: they must be stumpf verklebt along the sides and have little support; therefore I added the three little formers: they control the correct shape of the parts and make fixing them to the ceiling a piece of cake. They can be mounted easily even after the roof has been added to the frame which make things a lot easier.
The vertical bars that hold the benches are functional even in the model: they really support the roof. I found that their upper sections fit remarkably well with the marked locations on the ceiling. -
The air intake/engine frame seen from the right; plus a picture showing once more the odd looking, but intended asymmetry of the fuselage (this must have been a nightmare for the designer of the model). Third picture: starting the gunners compartment with in the nose the turning cylinder that will hold the machine gun:
-
Why not simply follow as much as possible the working order as described in the instructions : once completed, the nose frame must be attached to the main frame at this stage. So that is what I did:
-
Wow.. suddenly my model has grown to a lentgh of 30 cm...well, 29,8 cm to be precise. This sounds rather dramatic, but it is only because I followed the 'opis budowy' (building instructions) asking me to add the rear fuselage frame before 'getting into the details' =):
-
...nose wheel and main gear bays...:
-
The inside skins of my cabin wall panels are ready -they are loaded with details, but therefore they took quite a lot of time to finish. Of course I want my doors to be in an opened position to show the interior details so I removed the preprinted closed doors (they are also shown on this picture just for fun).
The door panels in an opened position are additional parts that will only be added in the final stage of this build.** Please note that there are two parts marked '10d'. The long one of the two is in fact part 11d, so it must be mounted at the the left side of the cabin.
-
Thanks for the tip regarding 10d
The inside skins looks very "delicious"
-
Inside of cabin walls in place. (Nothing wrong with the windows on the second picture; it's just some reflexions).
-
...working on the rear cockpit...:
p.s.: Is there a part 13v? I can not find it right now.
-
...fixing the inner skin of the cockpit sections. The shape of these parts seems allright, but I do not really like the small gap between the cabin part and the cockpit part. I can not explain this gap: the white marks on the inside (see second picture) are perfectly in line with one another:
-
With the left skin part in place the nose of the Hind looks a bit like an elegant shoe:
-
...applying the outer skin to the center fuselage section...:
-
I am extremely happy with these two new outer skin parts: they fit very, very well and the gap I told you about has disappeared!
-
Part 17 the one part skin clothing for the complete nose section- was the part that I feared most up to this moment; I knew that my colleague-builders had serious problems fixing it the right way. In my case everything went more than well: no additional incisions or other corrections needed. I hope that these four pictures show why I am satisfied with the result :]:
-
,,,assembling the exhaust pipes...:
-
Exhaust pipes in place inside the frame, plus, on the foreground, a simple template that I made based on outer skin part 25 to assure correct positioning of both pipes:
-
Great progress, JC! Always nice to knock off the tough bits
-
Thanks, Royaloakmin! As always: I am trying to do my best, but at the moment I have a bit less time left for modeling, so progress is also a bit slower than I would have liked...
...work on the main rotor base in progress...:
-
..still working on the main rotor base: added coolers etc.:
-
All the equipment belonging to the rotor base is finally ready. It looks impressing, but only specialists will be able to tell what the function of all these these parts is. All I can tell is that it has everything to do with cooling, gear boxes and rotor controls.
What a shame that soon a large part of all these beautiful details will be hidden behind skin part 25... -
Back from a trip to the sun I took up work on the Hind again and I am well on my way now covering the upper parts of the fuselage:
@ Ober Freak: I follow the order as indicated in the instructions, so my canopy and even cockpit interior details will follow much later. But I would certainly not be surprised when fit of the prefab canopy would cause problems for my model too. The cockpit area is so complex for this model and problems can arise almost everywhere... But I already ordered a second copy of the prefab canopy as a spare part to be able to experiment a bit by the time I will start mounting it.
-
Center air intake with a 17 blade fan at the inside and, on the right edge, what I suppose to be some kind of sensor (airflow/speed? temperature?):
-
...work on the two main air intakes is ready for the moment; the filters that belong to them will be added in a later stage:
-
The frame of the lower nose section with the shaped skin:
-
The Hind is taking its shape! =)
jcvandenbergh, nice and very clean work on the model -
Thank you, theppf!
