Sultan Ahmed Camii (fertig)

Hello,
as there are many English speaking "Architects" I will try to write this report in English.

Natürlich sind auch "nur" deutsch sprechende willkommen und ebenso Fragen auf deutsch!

The Sultan Ahmed Camii is also known as Blue Mosque. The model can be free downloaded at
http://cp.c-ij.com/english/3D-papercraft…et_camii_e.html
The scale is approx 1:280. The model has 30 sheets A4- size.
Here a photo which I made in Istanbul:

The first part is the big centre-dome in the middle. To give it a stable base, I reinforced it with cardboard. After this I fixed the surrounding wall. The fit is quite tight! So you have to make sure, to scar the folding-lines for the tabs not to far outside!
The instruction, which can be downloaded extra, tells me to join the parts section by section and glue the ready dome on the base. I decided to fix the unassembled dome first to the base, to make sure, that it will have a proper round shape.

next are the 8 arches and 4 towers with domes and small cones at the top
The centre part of the mosque is ready!
As you can see, the folding lines are quite thick but to paint them over, I nearly more have to paint the whole model completely. So I think, I will leave it.

@ John: thanks for the comments, you got a private message ;)
@ Modellschiff: Danke für deine Anmerkung, mit dem Platz mach's wie ich: lagere aus! Ich habe immer ein Modell im Schaufenster eines Reisebüros und einige in der Schule als Anschauungsmaterial!

@ all: next are the top parts of something like the supporting walls, I marked them in the pic. They are all made of small bricks with a roof and veeery small domes. As Ricleite mentioned in his report, it is very difficult to close the dome and fix the last tabs. That's why I cut the parts into two, assemble them and glue the two halve domes together. After all this small parts I think I'm ready for Micromodels :D

@ Wilfried: Ich finde auch, dass wir hier eine tolle Architektur-Plattform haben. Dass in anderen Bereichen vielleicht mehr Berichte sind, stört mich da gar nicht!

@ Tino:Thanks fore your comments.

@ all: It's going on with the main building. I reinforced the ceiling and the walls, to make sure, that it will remain stable, wile I add all the parts round the centre dome.

I managed to go on a little bit. The tab-numbers on part 9E are wrong! Instead of 9K and 9N it should be 9D and 9G! After the training before, the half domes are not too difficult. A bit tricky has been the assembly of the other parts, as the fit has not been to good and you have work in two levels. One part has to be glued at the wall, the bottom part is fixed on the ground, the other pars have to be fixed "hanging" in between.

It is taking shape beautifully, günter :)
Regarding the half domes, they are so flat that I wonder if the kit's designer couldn't come up with an easier solution. A four or five part assembly with circumferential glue lines would allow plenty of space for the tabs everywhere, which is not the case in the single part with radial glue lines. In this case, the tabs are very small near the base (the slices are very close) and also very small near the top, because they can't be wider than the slices! Interestingly, it looks that the top is covered with a nearly half-circle part. Was it included in the kit or did you add it to get a better finish?

Another four domes are added. It's nearlymore routine in the meanwhile.
With this the roof of the centre-building is finished.

It's going on!

Hello,
summer is over! No sailing, less gardening and also no holidays, but therefore more time for modelling. :]
What did I do in the meanwhile? Finished the main building including the four minarets.

The next was the base. I reinforced it with cardboard but did a mistake. When I glued the base on the cardboard, I didn't cover everything properly and now I have some small "mountains" :(. I thing I have to remove the whole thing and cover it again!

RE: Finally done!

Hello günter,

This model must be giving you great pleasure. The further it progresses, the more impressive it becomes!

A great build!

Cheers...John

P.S. I really like the template idea for the domes. That must have taken the sting out of all the repetitive work.
