Late last year, GPM published 2 pocket submarine models - Hecht and Molch. They look good and not too complicated :D. Both of them have 4 pages with parts, another 4 with diagrams and the covers.
I decided to start with the Hecht, which has a single torpedo.

Hallo Riclite!

I'm not sure to have understood you (my German is virtually nonexistent...) but it seems that something is missing in the kit! Well, I'll see it... -
Ric,
indeed the "Gluebear" is missing a part of the rudder mechanism (didn't say which one). He is not sure if he lost it or if it is missing from the kit.
He is awaiting your progress and is hoping that he can find the part.

Thank you for translating my thread! How stupid...I just forgot, riclite is writing and undrstanding in english!
So I say sorry for writing in german. I`m rally looking forward seeing yor u-boat raise!Greetings from Germany!

@ Michael - thank you very much for the translation :). I tried a free translator in the net but, you know, from German to English it is not really a straightforward task...
@ Klebär - don't be sorry - this is a German site! The ignorant one is me :rotwerd:I find the torpedo's nose very hard to glue properly. The part is small and it may not be a good idea to glue tabs inside. That's why I got the idea to roll a long piece of paper to match the nose shape and serve as a basis to glue. The hard/funny part is to devise a method to calculate the shape of the paper strip. I enclose a picture with the maths and another of the EXCEL worksheet. To get 16mm diameter with ordinary paper, I need a strip with nearly 1,80m!!! I draw it in smaller sections, as you can see in the last picture. At the moment, it doesnt look that everything will fit inside the torpedo's nose...
-
On the second try, with minor adjustments, it came up reasonably well. Paper thickness is a bit more than 0,11mm and that makes a difference.
The remaining parts for the torpedo are, in comparison, a piece of cake... -
Amazing! Now I know why we learn Math in school - to build paper torpedoes
Michael
-
Now - this is a great idea :super: . I think i was absent that time we learned this in math .
-
Yeah, there is always a nasty and hidden intention in our teachers minds!...
Perhaps to propel us forward -
A rather blunt nose...
-
I enclose a picture of the ailerons and rudder. Apparently, everything is OK.
Klebär, did you find the missing part? -
Hi Ricleite!
Sorry! I did not found it until now! I think it was not a part of the rudder itselve but from the holding?!?!
I`ll let you kno when I discover the Part in your building manual!OH...I almos forgot it to tell you! You are builing a very nice U-Boat! Go on!
Greetings

Hi Ricleite!
Another great model you are builing, it loooks like the nose is a perfect fit.
Do you have any ideas lined up what to do with the b/w display?
Zaphod
-
@ Klebär - well, perhaps that illusive part is on today's pictures
There is single part for the interior, for those who choose to use a plastic canopy. I used the paper one, as you see.@ Zaphod - thanks a lot for your comment :). Yes, I had no problems with the nose. The cross-section is simply circular, and that makes things easier. The only snag is that the black lines that define the parts make the joints easily visible, even if the edges are painted with appropriate colours (I do that with ABT pens).
Regarding the b/w display, I intend to use it as it is. Painting may make the display more conspicuous, which is not the best idea
However, I plan to scan the parts because it would be nasty to destroy the pretty cover. -
The parts for the rear end of the submarine didn't come up so well. The formers are a bit too large and need to be trimmed. GPM's very thick card doesn't help, either. I wonder why they don't use a thinner and more manageable paper...
-
There it is! One of the parts n picture 1 is missing! But I just don`t know wich one! Your model looks great! I hope I will find the missing part! It woulb be too bad if I can not not finish the Hecht...
Have fun!
P.Tietz

Yes, the kit is a nice one. I enclose a few pictures of the completed model.
-
And two more. On now to the Molch!
-
The parts for the Molch are also printed on 4 A4 pages. However, they are more densely printed. The main reason is that there are 2 torpedoes. The parts for both have the same shape (not surprisingly...) but different paint effects! A good point for GPM
-
Ricardo,
your "Hecht" looks very nice. I bet the "Molch" will be equally brilliant when finished...
I am still looking for plans to construct number three in the series, the "Seehund". Would make a nice display....
Michael
-
Thanks, Michael If GPM publishes a kit for the Seehund they will find a ready buyer
The torpedoes for the Molch are complete. Apart from the colour scheme, they are equal to the one in the Hecht. -
Hello Riclite,
great build !
I too hope GPM will eventually publish the "Seehund" and the other midget-subs, e.g. the "Neger".
Perhaps the Italian version which "sank" the "Viribus Unitis" would be interesting too in 1/25 and 1/250.
Zaphod
-
Hello Zaphod,
Well, I think GPM found an interesting subject on small subs at 1/25. Hopefully, more will come
The horizontal fin on the Molch doesn't look very hydrodynamic but it was fun to build... -
The nose was not so funny
GPM decided to make the nose in 10 parts (and 4 more inside) and I think they went a bit too far. Fewer parts would still make a good nose and would be simpler to assemble. Fortunately, the fit is very good. -
Some more pictures - tail, torpedo holders and the cockpit.
-
Hello,
a question about the "cockpit": Shouldn´t this be made from plastic?
Zaphod
-
Good question, Zaphod! On the cover pictures the canopy is plastic, as well as the lateral glass panels. However, the kit does include a paper part for the canopy and no parts for the interior. As a consequence, I choose to build the paper version.
The case was similar in the Hecht and I did the same thing.I enclose pictures of the last assemblies - tail and the torpedo holders.
-
The Molch is complete. I enclose some pictures of it
-
And the two boats...
-
...head on!
-
Ricardo,
great job! I was following your build closely and am impressed of your job! I'm also impressed of GPM's work, nice, small and accurate models. Great pictures, lovin' it! And - of course - hope to see more!
Old Rutz
PS.: Will be some challenge for Josef Mayer to built these models in 1:250 or for Joachim Frerichs in 1:500 ;-)))
-
Hello Ricardo,
really nice work and good looking builds! So your are guilty that I'm ordering those models with our centralized buying at GPM.
Best regards
René
-
Hi Ricardo,
very nice, indeed. I already placed my order for the kits.
Michael
-
Thank you very much for your comments
The subs were fun to build, despite the very thick paper. If GPM publishes more, I'll be a ready buyer
In the meantime, my next model will be a building - Erkotyp's Pernstejn. -
Hi Riclite!
You habe done two great jobs!!! After finishing my actual project I will restart my Hecht! You made me searching for te missing part!
Whats your next project?
Looking forward
P.Tietz
-
Hello Klebär!
My next project is here:
Pernstejn castle - Erkotyp - 1/220
At the moment, I have no plans to build more boats...
-
I just received the "Hecht" the other day, and found that parts (35 40a 40 42a 42), were missing.. Going to the GPM site, you find going to the download page a PDF file with the missing parts...
-
Dear Riclite:
Very nice model indeed!
Thanks for the report,
Matthias
-
@ eatcrow2 - how strange! I seldom read the instructions (and never if they are only in Polish...) and the fault is probably mine but I didn't notice that any parts were missing
@ Matthias - thanks a lot. I'm glad you liked the report
