Dornier J Wal "Plus Ultra"

The Plus Ultra was an special version of the spanish Do J Wal.

It was used to explore the posibility of a civilian passenger route between Spain and South America.

It departed from Palos de la Frontera, in Huelva, Spain on January 22 1926 and arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina on January 26, almost 100 years ago.

I'm officially starting this proyect today, and I expect to have at least the hull reinforcements done this week. The goal is to finish and publish this model before December, so there will be many finished models the day of the centenary.

About the Wal, the first version will be the Plus Ultra, and then all the other variants of this machine. Almost each plane had different engines, guns and windows, so it's going to be very interesting

ie Plus Ultra war eine Sonderausführung der spanischen Do J Wal.

Sie wurde eingesetzt, um die Möglichkeit einer zivilen Passagierroute zwischen Spanien und Südamerika zu erkunden.

Sie startete am 22. Januar 1926 von Palos de la Frontera in Huelva, Spanien, und erreichte Buenos Aires, Argentinien, am 26. Januar – vor fast 100 Jahren.

Ich beginne dieses Projekt heute offiziell und gehe davon aus, dass zumindest die Rumpfverstärkungen diese Woche fertig sein werden. Ziel ist es, dieses Modell vor Dezember fertigzustellen und zu veröffentlichen, damit es zum 100. Geburtstag viele fertige Modelle geben wird.

Was die Wal betrifft, so wird die erste Version die Plus Ultra sein, gefolgt von allen anderen Varianten dieser Maschine. Fast jedes Flugzeug hatte unterschiedliche Triebwerke, Waffen und Fenster, es wird also sehr interessant.

Now, the model has (so far) three interesting details:

1) It has external ribs like the Saro London

2) It has an open cockpit that I will need to do

3) It has the same flat keel as the Do-24.

You can see the wooden wheels and tail support and yes, they will be included.

Das Modell weist (bisher) drei interessante Details auf:

1) Es hat Außenrippen wie die Saro London.

2) Es hat ein offenes Cockpit, das ich noch nachbauen muss.

3) Es hat den gleichen Flachkiel wie die Do-24.

Man sieht die hölzernen Räder und die Heckstütze, und ja, sie werden mitgeliefert.

Restarting the proyect.

Internally is going to be similar to my Do-24, meaning that the pontoons are going to be integrated to the fuselage.

Of course, the Wal is more squared than the -24, so it should have less parts.

This week I expect to finish all the internals, including wings and engine.

Next week should be doing the skin of the wings and control surfaces.

I will be using real pictures of the real Plus Ultra, so the skin wil be the most realistic possible, like my Do-24 did.

Projekt neu starten.

Das Innenleben wird dem meiner Do-24 ähneln, d. h. die Pontons werden in den Rumpf integriert.

Natürlich ist die Wal quadratischer als die der Do-24, daher sollte sie weniger Teile haben.

Diese Woche werde ich voraussichtlich alle Innenteile fertigstellen, einschließlich Flügel und Motor.

Nächste Woche sollte die Außenhaut der Flügel und Steuerflächen angefertigt werden.

Starting with the hardest part, and it's not the wing supports or the engine: it's the dimensions.

Beginnen wir mit dem schwierigsten Teil. Und das sind nicht die Flügelstützen oder der Motor: Es sind die Abmessungen.

Jetzt habe ich Bilder vom echten Flugzeug (es könnte einen leichten Fischaugeneffekt haben).

Ich habe eine vermeintliche Zeichnung vom Originalflugzeug.

Ich habe eine Zeichnung von einem anderen Do J Wal.

Keiner von beiden stimmt überein.

Das Bild zeigt in Gelb die Plus Ultra-Zeichnung, in Rot das Bild und in Blau die Wal-Zeichnung.

Update:

Found more pictures of the Plus Ultra. It lacked the rudder that was present in other versions of the Wal, so the keel was bigger than normal.

So the red line is the right one

Update:

Ich habe weitere Bilder der Plus Ultra gefunden. Ihr fehlte das Ruder, das bei anderen Versionen der Wal vorhanden war, daher war der Kiel größer als üblich.

Die rote Linie ist also die richtige.

Using all the drawings and pictures to produce the most faithfull drawing of the "Plus Ultra"

This drawing is going to be the blueprint from where all the parts are going to be extracted.

You can see that the pilot is in the middle of the plane and the copilot is to the side, where he can see the height over the waves better.

Another detail: the frontal propeller has four blades, while the rear one has two. This is true only for the Plus Ultra, other versions had two fixed, four fixed or ever three variable blades.

Anhand aller Zeichnungen und Bilder wird die detaillierteste Zeichnung der „Plus Ultra“ erstellt.

Diese Zeichnung dient als Vorlage, aus der alle Teile entnommen werden.

Man erkennt, dass sich der Pilot in der Mitte des Flugzeugs befindet und der Kopilot seitlich sitzt, um die Höhe über den Wellen besser einschätzen zu können.

Ein weiteres Detail: Der vordere Propeller hat vier Blätter, der hintere zwei. Dies gilt nur für die Plus Ultra; andere Versionen hatten zwei, vier oder sogar drei verstellbare Blätter.

The blueprints of the model are finished, at least the fuselage.

Now I need to do the internal profiles, print them and start with the skin.

You can see four details in this picture:

1) The rudder is big, and probably I could do it a separate part (Same with the elevators).

2) The rear end of the fuselage looks similar to my Stranraer, so I know where I will be taking the ideas.

3) All the lower hull seems to be a copy of the Do-24, so again I know where I will be looking for.

4) The rear propeller has only two blades

Die Baupläne des Modells sind fertig, zumindest der Rumpf.

Jetzt muss ich die Innenprofile erstellen, sie drucken und mit der Außenhaut beginnen.

Auf diesem Bild sind vier Details zu sehen:

1) Das Seitenruder ist groß, und ich könnte es wahrscheinlich als separates Teil fertigen (dasselbe gilt für die Höhenruder).

2) Das Heck des Rumpfes ähnelt meinem Stranraer, daher weiß ich, wo ich die Ideen herbekommen werde.

3) Die gesamte untere Wanne scheint eine Kopie der Do-24 zu sein, also weiß ich auch hier, wo ich suchen werde.

4) Der Heckpropeller hat nur zwei Blätter.

At last the blueprint of the fuselage is finished.

I placed three profiles here. The first one is a generic Do Wal, maybe one real but I haven't searched which one is.

The second is a supposed profile of the Plus Ultra but with some mistakes, for example the drawing shows a water rudder when the real one doesn't have it.

And the third and lower is my final design with the pictures corrections.

Endlich ist der Entwurf des Rumpfes fertig.

Ich habe hier drei Profile eingefügt. Das erste ist ein generisches Do Wal, vielleicht ein echtes, aber ich habe nicht nachgeschaut, welches. Das zweite ist ein vermeintliches Profil der Plus Ultra, allerdings mit einigen Fehlern. Beispielsweise zeigt die Zeichnung ein Wasserruder, das das Original nicht hat.

Und das dritte und darunter ist mein endgültiger Entwurf mit den Bildkorrekturen.

And found another problem

The name of the plane (Plus Ultra) was draw in a flowing kind of font that doesn't correspond to any of the existing today. The Plus Ultra in the spanish museum keeps that flowing name.

But somebody in the last 99 years remade the name of the real plane in Argentina in a very basic San Serif font

So I'm going to use the original flowing font still used in the spanish museum. Sorry not sorry.

Ich fange gerade an, die Außenhaut des Flugzeugrumpfs zu zeichnen.

Und bin auf ein weiteres Problem gestoßen Der Name des Flugzeugs (Plus Ultra) wurde in einer geschwungenen Schriftart geschrieben, die keiner der heute existierenden entspricht. Die Plus Ultra im spanischen Museum behält diese geschwungene Schriftart bei. Aber irgendjemand hat in den letzten 99 Jahren den Namen des echten Flugzeugs in Argentinien in einer sehr einfachen serifenlosen Schriftart neu geschrieben Deshalb werde ich die ursprüngliche geschwungene Schriftart verwenden, die auch im spanischen Museum noch verwendet wird. Tut mir leid, aber auch wieder nicht.

The inner fuselage is printed, now I just need to glue the parts.

It's funny how similar is to my Do-24.

Just with one tail. And squared instead of rounded upside.

Anyway, tomorrow I'll start to design/apply the skin. And then, just the engine and wing. I hope to finish it before the end of November.

This first test doesn't have the cockpit, but the next one will do. And the final one will too!

Es ist witzig, wie ähnlich sie meiner Do-24 ist.

Nur mit einem Leitwerk. Und oben eckig statt abgerundet.

Wie dem auch sei, morgen fange ich mit dem Entwurf/Aufbringen der Außenhaut an. Danach folgen nur noch Triebwerk und Tragfläche. Ich hoffe, bis Ende November fertig zu sein.

Dieser erste Test hat noch kein Cockpit, aber der nächste wird eins haben. Und der letzte auch!

Today I had planned to build the skin of the fuselage. And I started to design parts, then went to see the wing...

So it has beed a day designing and the only physical part has been the sides of the fuselage from the rear of the pontoons to the bow.

Heute wollte ich eigentlich die Außenhaut des Rumpfes bauen. Ich habe mit der Konstruktion der Teile begonnen und mir dann die Tragfläche angesehen… Es war also ein ganzer Tag Konstruktionsarbeit, und das einzige physisch fertiggestellte Teil sind die Rumpfseiten vom Heck der Schwimmer bis zum Bug.

Wie dem auch sei, viele Teile sind bereits konstruiert.

Today I'm planning to print the front half of the Plus Ultra. It has gone a bit slow because I have been testing the rivets.

But I think I know how they are going to look.

The name of the plane has been done, too. As I said, I'll be using the original font instead of the currently used in the museum.

So... this weekend the hull should be done!

Heute drucke ich die vordere Hälfte der Plus Ultra. Es geht etwas langsamer voran, weil ich die Nieten getestet habe.

Aber ich denke, ich weiß jetzt, wie sie aussehen werden.

Der Name des Flugzeugs ist auch fertig. Wie gesagt, ich verwende die Originalschriftart anstelle der aktuell im Museum verwendeten.

The frontal half of the fuselage skin is finished.

And the engines are being designed.

I expect to finish it before the first week of December, or maybe this November if there is nothing unforeseen in real life.

Die Triebwerke werden derzeit konstruiert.

Ich gehe davon aus, dass ich das Flugzeug vor der ersten Dezemberwoche fertigstellen werde, vielleicht sogar schon im November, falls nichts Unvorhergesehenes dazwischenkommt.

The design/assembly of the Plus Ultra is advancing without problems.

Due to a mistake I did in the assembly, I discovered that one big internal reinforcement is unnecessary. Meanwhile I have been designing the wing and tail surfaces. I had been undecided if doing the tail in one or two pieces, but I'll do it split, allowing to glue it off-center. As always, the propellers will turn.

Once I finish this first alpha-test of the hull, I'll start another with the cockpit and the improved squeleton.

Die Konstruktion und Montage des Plus Ultra schreiten problemlos voran.

Durch einen Montagefehler stellte ich fest, dass eine große interne Verstärkung überflüssig ist. Parallel dazu habe ich die Tragflächen und das Leitwerk konstruiert. Ich war mir zunächst unsicher, ob ich das Leitwerk ein- oder zweiteilig gestalten sollte, werde es aber teilen, um es außermittig verkleben zu können. Die Propeller werden sich wie immer drehen.

Sobald ich den ersten Alpha-Test des Rumpfes abgeschlossen habe, beginne ich mit dem Cockpit und dem verbesserten Skelett.

The tail design is finished and assembled. Same with the pontoons.

Now I'm working with the wings/engine section, that must be totally assembled before joining to the fuselage.

Then comes the struts, later the cockpit, then assembling the second alfa-test model, then the small details like gun hatch covers, and finally the beta-test that will be printed in color.

Das Heckdesign ist fertig und montiert. Dasselbe gilt für die Schwimmer.

Jetzt arbeite ich an der Tragflächen-/Motorsektion, die vor dem Zusammenbau mit dem Rumpf vollständig montiert sein muss. Danach folgen die Streben, später das Cockpit, dann der Zusammenbau des zweiten Alpha-Testmodells, dann die kleinen Details wie die Lukenabdeckungen und schließlich der Beta-Test, der farbig gedruckt wird.

This week I haven't printed anything new, but I have been designing the underside of the hull, drawing the strips of the pontoons and underside, the rivets on the sides of the fuselage and designing the wings and engine.
In other words: rivet-counting

Hi everybody. I'm starting a new group where I'll be publishing all my old models.

I really like to work with ecardmodels and I hope to keep publishing with them for many many years. Its just that the people usually sees the first pages of the site and there are many good models that are more than 2-3 months old that aren't seen. So I'll be mixing old and newly published models.

The wings and engine have been designed, they should be assembled this weekend.

Once done, I'll design the struts, test them, and then start the second alpha model that will have the cockpit and gun hatch covers.

And then the final beta-test in color just before releasing.

Die Tragflächen und der Motor sind konstruiert und sollten dieses Wochenende montiert werden.
