DHC-6-400 Seaplane / Wasserflugzeug

The Twin Otter is one of that models that it's not a warbird, not a "hey, I know that plane".

So one day I decided to do one of them. And I started to do it with floats. And then did some more. And placed them in ecardmodels.

The construction is based on sections that follow the same paneling of the real one, reinforced with formers.

And, as always, I'll be doing any combination of exhaust, stair, float and antenae that the real ones have.

Here we can see the begining of the fuselage, before gluying the sections.

Die Twin Otter gehört zu den Modellen, die kein Kampfflugzeug sind, kein „Hey, das kenne ich doch“-Modell.

Eines Tages beschloss ich also, eines davon zu bauen. Ich begann mit Schwimmern. Dann kamen noch mehr dazu. Und ich platzierte sie in ecardmodels.

Die Konstruktion basiert auf Sektionen, die der Beplankung des Originals folgen und mit Spanten verstärkt sind.

Und wie immer werde ich jede Kombination aus Auspuff, Treppe, Schwimmer und Antennen verwenden, die auch beim Original vorhanden ist.

Hier sehen wir den Anfang des Rumpfes, bevor die Sektionen verklebt wurden.

Now comes the level of detail of the painting and the weathering. Usually with plastic models we can control it with preshading, 3d surfaces and many layers of paint. Here is the designer the one that must do all of this.

I usually start with a normal drawing of the part, similar to any blueprint. Then I see pictures for details, include shadows, soften paneling and grooves, place the burn marks...

I could have placed more weathering, chipped paint and shoe marks, but I felt than in this case was better to do the planes more "cared". So I limited the details to engine smoke and sky reflection in the windows.

The DHC-6 has two nose sizes, two kinds of floats, two exhaust types, many different antenae placements and many combinations of stairs in each of the five fuselage doors. And all of them are being respected and done when neccesary.

Nun kommt es auf den Detaillierungsgrad der Lackierung und der Verwitterung an. Bei Kunststoffmodellen lässt sich dies normalerweise durch Preshading, 3D-Oberflächen und viele Farbschichten steuern. Der Designer ist hier derjenige, der all das erledigen muss.

Ich beginne normalerweise mit einer normalen Zeichnung des Teils, ähnlich einer Blaupause. Dann sehe ich mir Bilder für Details an, füge Schatten hinzu, glätte Verkleidungen und Rillen, platziere Brandflecken …

Ich hätte mehr Verwitterung, abgeplatzte Farbe und Schuhabdrücke hinzufügen können, aber ich fand es in diesem Fall besser, die Flugzeuge sorgfältiger zu gestalten. Daher beschränkte ich die Details auf Triebwerksrauch und Himmelsreflexionen in den Fenstern.

Die DHC-6 hat zwei Buggrößen, zwei Schwimmerarten, zwei Auspufftypen, viele verschiedene Antennenpositionen und viele Treppenkombinationen in jeder der fünf Rumpftüren. Und all diese Punkte werden berücksichtigt und bei Bedarf umgesetzt.

A model as complex as the Twin Otter must have some difficult stage, and in this case is the float struts.

In this case I designed a support were all the parts can be placed without stress or lack of simetry.

This support was very helpfull and let me dry the parts too without problem.

You can see that the Twin Otter has a tube running under the fuselage joing all the fuel tanks.

Keeping with the assembly of this model, each wing has six hinges that are different each one from the other, including one that goes against the fuselage.

This particular model has an interesting detail, and it is that the logo of the company is in the inner side of the engines, so it can be seen when the passengers take pictures from the plane.

Btw, I usually ask to some friends of mine to do the "exposition model", because I don't have the finesse to place each part exactly in its place. The next post will show the canadian Twin Otter that a friend of mine is assembling

This is the C-FDYL being build by a friend, 1/100 scale.

This version in the normal three sizes is available in ecardmodels and has been a great success.

While designing the wheels for the land-based Twin Otter, today I uploaded another hidro belonging to Jawakara, Islands Maldives.

So far I just have uploaded the 1:72 to ecardmodels, but I expect to upload the 1:33 soon.

About the 1:100 scale, not all the versions of the Twin Otter are done at this size, only the most sold. But if you want to build any of them, just let me a message

I'm currently designing the wheeled version of the Twin Otter.

I have some color schemes selected, here are only three.

I expect to make the alpha test in b/w tomorrow, and print the beta-test in color this Monday.

While I find time to end the tests of the wheeled version, I advanced a bit with this repaint. Now, the float is full of algae.

Let's make a votation. Should I let it dirty or clean?

Während ich Zeit finde, die Tests der Radversion abzuschließen, habe ich mit diesem Neuanstrich etwas weitergemacht. Jetzt ist der Schwimmer voller Algen.

Lasst uns abstimmen. Soll ich ihn schmutzig lassen oder reinigen?
