Saratoga GPM - Rumpfprobleme?

  • Hallo,

    Hi there,

On stock I have here USS Saratoga, in printing and details a terrific model. In the Internet I have already spotted some pictures of ready-built models.

I was wondering about the one-tone gap over almost the full starboard side of the ship. It iis rather conflicting with the colourful camouflage scheme.

Was this also the case with the original? Or is this a complete failure in the construction of the model?trl. eskatee

  • servus zaphod,

The "gap" which took your attention is the bulge, which was applied later on to the ship to avoid stability problems. The starboard bulge was thicker compared to the port bulge.trl. eskatee

  • Hallo Raimund,

So the dark part must be the bulge?

In this case the model is not consequently camouflaged anymore, I suppose, because the scheme is interruptedtrl.eskatee

  • servus zaphod,

    The 'Dazzle' Measures (31, 32, and 33) - Authorized in March 1943
as a supplement to the June 1942 handbook, these three measures
consisted of combining either two or three colors - pale grey (5-P),
haze grey (5-H), light grey (5-L), navy blue (5-N), ocean grey (5-O),
and dull black (BK). These were designed to be applied either as
straight geometric designs or in wavy patterns. All horizontal surfaces
are painted deck blue (20-B) and in addition some portions are usually
    ocean grey (5-O).

According to the above mentioned measure the model is consequent, because the camouflage scheme is designed as a countermeasure considering submarine attacks, excluding the horizontal parts of the shiptrl. eskatee

  • Hallo!

Originally USS Saratoga was planned to be a battlecruiser. As an outcome of the Washington Conference, plans were altered, because from this moment on, battlefleets had to be reduced. This could be done, about 30% of the hull was ready (and aircraft carriers were not mentioned in the conference outcome, addition:eskatee)

According to my informations a bulge on portside was planned as a counterbalance to the upper structures, before 1939 she was not equipped as such.
Plans which I have here in front of me are showing the bulge and are dated 1944. On a sideview dating from 1937 the bulge does not appear.trl.eskatee

  • Hallo Zaphod!

    Hoi Ludwig,

Sagen die Pläne aus ob obengenanntes stimmt?

    groetjes,
    Gert

Can the above mentioned be concluded out of the plans?

  • hallo zusammen,

Sorry, I made a mistake, there was only a bulge at the starboard side.

laut 'aircraft carriers, roger chesneau, p 202' :

In 1942 Saratoga's deck was extended in length to 900ft; at the same time
her funnel was reduced in height by 14ft, her bridge remodelled an a pole
mast fitted, and a prominent bulge was added to the starboard side of the
hull to improve buoyancy, thus allowing her 1100 tons of oill fuel ballast to be utilised and thereby increasing range to 12500 nm at 15 kts.

  • Hallo zusammen!

    @ rkelterer
Hallo Raimund! Sorry.....! ?(
You might have been confused because I introduced the portside topic, sorry
    @eskatee
Hallo Gert!

I just have rather small sketches (DIN A5) unfortunately.
The line plans of Rainer are the right stuff to make a proper judgement

A more thorough look at the facts reveiled this:

The Lexington-class consisted out of two aircraft carriers:

    Lexington CV 2
    + Saratoga CV 3.

    Dann erfolgten Umbaumaßnahmen

The following changes to the hull took place:

    - 1939 beide Rümpfe gleich 1939 identical hulls
    ab 1939 n u r an der Backbord-Seite einen Wulst (Bulge)
als Gewichtsausgleich. Das gilt für beide Schiffe! from 1939 on: both ships only on the portside a bulge as a counterweight to the superstructures.
ab 1942 die "Lexington" wurde am 8.5.1942 versenkt on May 6th of 1942, USS Lexington was sunk
Steuerbordseite!! At this moment USS Saratoga was equipped with a starboard bulge

Conclusion: in a 1944 version the model should have bulges on both sides

Additionally a picture of USS Saratoga as she was before 1939

    Grüße

  • Hallo,

The ship's crest was designed to represent the heroic action on the Island of
Okinawa in World War II for which Pharmicist's Mate Second Class William
David Halyburton, Jr. was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. The
Scarlet and gold bars in the shield denote service in a land action with the
U.S. Marines; the alternating colors of the bars symbolize the exchange of fire
with an opposing force. The heraldic lion rampart in the midst of the field
denotes a single act of great courage, i.e., Halyburton placing himself in the
line of fire, in complete disregard for his own safety, in order to shield from
further harm, and render medical aid to, a fallen Marine, thereby giving his
own life in exchange. The lion is blue, the color of the Medal of Honor ribbon,
and is strewn with thirteen stars, as is that decoration, the nation's highest.
