SS ZUIDERKRUIS/ Scaldis/ 1:250 [FERTIG]

  • Hallo Zusammen,

Zuiderkruis was a Victory-ship, developed out of the Standard C-type dry-cargo ships. Victory-ships came after the other standard freighter types such as British Empire and Ocean and the well-known American Liberty-ships. Plans of building Liberty-ships raised after tremendous losses of ships on the North Atlantic. During the war there were 2751 Liberty ships and 531 Victory ships built. After the war 3 Victory ships were built to completion.

Directly after the war 39 Victory ships were bought by the Dutch Government to rebuilt the merchant fleet.

Originally ss Zuiderkruis was built as Cranston Victory by Oregon Shipbuilding Company, Portland, Oregon.

In 1947 she was sold to the Dutch Government. She was first rebuilt as a troop transport with a capacity of 1600 troops. In 1951/52 she was rebuilt as an immigrant-ship (capacity 850 passengers).
As such she served until 1962, afterwards she was sold to the Koninklijke Marine (Dutch Navy), NATO pennant A 853, were she served as barracks.
She was scrapped at Bilbao, November 1969.

    picture texts in Italics:

Yellowcoe: Hey Captain, already back from the journey? Did you find a Winter?
Blooker: I only found a skiing-hal West out of Schwerin, they might be getting drowned. Instead of this I saw the Southern Cross and brought it with me (Zuiderkruis = Southern Cross).
    Let's get it build!

Huge instructions, both in writings and drawings

Yellowcoe: Waaaaaaaaaw, that's a lot of text! What does it say? Does she have A-type masts? I am already capable of reading the A!

Blooker: Happily we have got instructions in German also, I wil go studying them; You can do the drawings, so there is no need for reading to you

  • Moin Herbert,

As usual we will start with part 1 :)

Yellowcoe: What do we have here, it looks like a pole for an oil-rig
Blooker: Just be patient, have some tea; to us this is an unusual start

  • Teil 1 bis 3 verbinden wir miteinander

We have to combine parts 1-3

Yellowcoe: I've got the answer, this must be a reinforced bow for a freighter which will saii through the Icesea
Blooker: You're kidding, this is something like a backbone to the barge; on this we will put the ribs

  • Auf diesen Dreikant werden die Spanten gesteckt

Upon this triangular beam we will put the ribs

Blooker: It works out well, as you can see; not a bad thought at all! I sincerely think there is no torsion because of the triangular shape of the beam. We just have to cut out everything precisely.
Yellowcoe: OK, Captain, I will cut out all the ribs first and glue them afterwards.

  • Heut bauen wir das Spantengerüst auf:

Now we will build the frame with its ribs

Blooker: Well, do you recognize something? This is a decent start and looks like a framework already.
Yellowcoe: It looks at least like a fish when I have eaten it!

The completed framework. This will last to provide an excellent base for a perfect fit

Yellowcoe: Ehhhhhhhhh?????? Captain????????.......... What actually is a constr..., construct......, waterthing?
Blooker: Constructive waterbase it is called. Down to this line the ship will rise out of the water.

Yellowcoe: Don't say again that I am a silly cow, I am not as qualified as you are, you know,....

    Hallo BlauHei-Team!

could you tell us a bit more about this construction?

    Servus
    hvt

    Hallo Hagen,

There are no problems at all, but take care of starting at the middle of the beam glueing. The triangular shape prevents torsion (but you have to cut out the ribs exactly). There is no need for fixating the construction on a flat base.

  • Wir widmen uns dem Hauptdeck:

Let's have a look at the main decks:

Yellowcoe: Maindecks: it looks more like wobbly decks
Blooker I just glued them together before I forged the edges

  • Die ersten Wände werden gestellt:

The first walls of the deckhouses are positioned:

Yellowcoe: Well, I will put the first walls of the deckhouses into position. I will connect them to the maindecks, which isn't wobbly anymore. How did you cope with that?
Blooker: Well, let's say, captains do cope with that

  • Es folgt die Back

    And now the focsle

Yellowcoe: Focsle??????There are no sails on this ship, think...., think......, think........

  • Zeit für die Bordwände.
    Wir beginnen am Heck

And now the hull parts, to start with the stern

Yellowcoe: Should this belong to the stern?
Blooker: Yep, we will start to build the stern
Yellowcoe: And it's growing and growing, yippieieh!
    Blooker: Ready! Yellowcoe: Let's go!

  • Das Teil aus der Nähe:

    Close-up

  • Das fertige Heckmodul können wir nun montieren

The completed sternmodule can now be positioned

  • Weiter geht es mit der Bugsektion:

    Continuing with the bow-section

Yellowcoe: We still have a lot of holes in the barge, I am so happy there hasn't been serious flooding

  • Der Schiffsrumpf schließt sich so langsam

    Slowly the hull is completed

Blooker: Can you already see this is starting to look like a ship?
Yellowcoe; Yep, this Emmentaler is loosing its holes; an interesting construction, I've never seen something like this before

An in my opinion true alternative to the "expensive" foto-etched parts are the transparents with railings coming together with this kit (railings out of thin paper are also included)

  • Hallo Jochen,

Die Victory-Schiffe hatten Dampfturbinen, waren also sehr modern:

Before positioning of the B-deck, we have to position 81 struts:

Yellowcoe: Don't hit me, Bloo, the instructions are telling us we should have struts of 0,6mm. In stock we have only 0,8mm, I have given them the correct length and painted them also.
Blooker: What a fuzz, think about your thinking, can you tell me if there is somebody who can see the difference of 0,2mm? We will proceed, well done, old chap!

  • Mit dem B- Deck geht es weiter:

    The B-deck:

Blooker: now we can equip the B-deck and position the walls of the deckhouses.
Yellowcoe: Wow, do I here a B, Bloo? Yippieieieieie, now I know the A-mast and the B-deck, what comes after the B?

At this very moment you have to position the stairs, on a later stage this would be complicated

I am just wondering about the position of the door and the staircase? Was this the case in the original situation?

    Prepared for the next deck

Blooker: On this one we will put the A-deck, did you had the idea, this would be the C-deck?
Yellowcoe: You are right, what was the name of the third letter? Now we have A-, B-deck, and goes right down with the letters, I suppose Y-deck will be the keel?

  • Hallo Hagen,
