P-51D "Petie" 1:33 Halinski

The P51-D "Petie" from Halinski is my next plane.
A shot of the front side.

The paper is kind of glossy,so I'm having some troubles focusing on the tiny outlines......
I wanted a soft start so I started with the battery arrangement.

Then I started on the cockpit floor.

This kit seems very nice with the "aluminium" print.
Since this is a big step for me.....to start a Halinski kit without very much experience, I will proceed kind of slow I guess.....

Ouch!! I see the expectations are a bit too high!!
I might have put myselves into a bit too deep water with this plane, but as I have done before....I'll just pick along and see how things developes down the path of tiny parts.....

The start of the P51......
I start with making the internal framing for the cockpit section.
The drawings in the Halinski kits is really good I think.

Here is the first dryfit of the parts I have cut out now.I have some other parts that I'm doing some hardening ties on....I'm soaking the backside of some parts with thinned varnish just to see if that's any good.

I hope to have this frame section done today If I'm lucky...

Hy Johnny,

I am also making a kit of silver printed one and have trouble dealing with cut edge.
Cut edge of my build doesn't look good and now stop building until come up with solution.
I am looking forward to seeing how you deal with it.

Hello Yu!

In the halinski kit the parts has a very tiny black outline as you might can see on the enlarged image below. So i don't expect any problems dealing with the parts as long as I can focuse on the outline while cutting :)

I love to see you dealing with cutting "just" close to the black line, or "over" the black line, or "below" the black line... is how I feel when I am cutting a piece. ;)

Thanks for showing your great work.

Hi Johnny,

I apologize my clumsy expression.
My trouble is that cut edge get hangnail and printed ink chip off.
In the case of ordinary printing hangnailed edges can be flattened by rubing up them but in the case of silver printed paper rubbing up by metalic tool changes tone of print.

Anyway, good luck!

Ah now I see Yu!!
You could try to spray the sheets with some varnish to prevent the flaking I guess. I think I have seen such procedure mentioned here and there.

The frames of the cockpit section is done.

I'm missing two parts called InP and InL who will go in there somewhere....when I have figured out where to put them :)

Now it's time to start on the sidepanels, and now I see more of the halinski details....This is really fun!!

The drawing of the left panel shows that it contains 17 parts....

Of course there was some internal framing

That frame should be covered by another skin...

It doesn't look quite as bad as with the macrolense....

First instrument in place

The skinning have started.

It looks that the fit is very good :)

Some more sections on the front is put on.

Next is the air inlet in the front that doesn't show anywhere on the drawings...So I'm not quite sure how far back it's supposed to be.
But I make the remaining segments and maybe it will fit somwhere when they are put together.

I finished the nose part today.

The front part was a bit tricky to get nice looking, so I'm not complete happy about the result of the look of the ait inlet. But seen from the normal viewing distance it looks ok.The macro lense spots every single detail :)

Next is the framework for the first and second segment behind the cockpit.
A lot of parts involved on this part. Will continue that part tomorrow.

And at last a pic to show the mess around me when I'm in the middle of a build :)

I did have some second thoughts about the next section after the cockpit.
As I see it , it's vital that it alignes with all panel lines and markings on the top and sides.

First I assembled the inner structure

next I did was to connect the two following sections with it's connecting strip, making thel align perfectly all way around.
Then I could glue it onto the cockpit section with perfect control of the lines and fit.

And as we can see from the next pictures the alignment is near perfect.

Next was to insert the framepart and glue it where it belonged and close the remaining gap at the bottom. Then I mounted the lower side panels.

Next section is the one with the tailwheel and tailfins.
Many parts to be cutted and assembled.

Just put some parts together to have a look

Yes I'm dealing with the glossy paper :)
It just took a little time to get used to it.

The tail is almost done, just some small parts in the slot where the rudder will go.

A few thoughts about metal print....it sure looks really good!!
But there are a few drawbacks....
Everything become visible....there are nowhere to hide errors...and I do a lot of them...not the biggest but the small ones that would have been invisible on a normal print.Well error might be the wrong word, but inaccuracy is more right. And those inaccuracies becomes very visible with the macro lense and the spot lighting :)

The rudder.Drawing

Inner framework

The skins had to be formed before gluing and it's kind of picky work to get this joints nicely done.
Here I have glued one side to the rudder

And the skins are on.

The side facing forward had some flips to be joined.I found it a bit hard to get this niceely done, but it's invisible after the rudder is mounted...so I let it pass

The rudder put loosely on.It won't be glued in place before I have the radio antenna going from the top of the tailfin through the canopy and onto the pilots seat...So to have a chance of getting it straight it will be tightened up through the tailfin after glued in front.

Now on to the vertical stabilizers..

And you asked me in Norwegian.

Did you blank form that rear tester(roof over your bed) and in that case,,where did you execute it.
