Micromodels / Set TO II Excavator / 1:250 Diorama [FERTIG]

Hello Friends,

It has been some time since I built a Micromodel. You can see some of my previous projects here, here and here.

Not to out done by Ulrich's schöne Kran or Christian's Superung Kran I have settled on one of the more obscure Micromodels the "Mammoth Excavator" in approximately 1:250 scale. As the kit was first published in 1953 this is obviously a reprint.

I will begin construction shortly.

Kind Regards,

Cris

Hi Chris,
that's a very interesting model of an old digger. With the amount of bow in the photo, the model must indeed be very detailed. Anyway, I'm gonna watch the construction and I wish you much fun and success in the design.
Helmut
PS:. Can the kit be ordered today somewhere?

Hi Helmut,

A good source is always Diederik at Zeist Bouwplaten or check Bas Poolen's excellent World of Micromodels. Finally, you can check Marcle Models.

Good Luck and I hope to see some of your work soon!

Kind Regards,

Cris

Autocraft - a company in England - aquired the rights and many original drawings for Micromodels and they are offering legal re-prints of many models as Micro-New-Models. The Excavator model is one they are offering. They mainly sell though "buy it now" listings on Ebay and are easily found by doing a search on "micromodel". If you want to build Micromodels - rather than collect them - this is a very good way of aquiring them at a low cost.

There is a current offering for the excavator:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Micromodels-MA…=item2ec243ae9a

Hope this helps

David

Hi David,

Thanks for that, I was unaware of the Autocraft offerings. I think its great that there are several firms offering reprints and indeed seeing some of the unpublished work through to completion. I like to collect myself, but always with an eye toward building the model eventually (of course like most of us I would have to live to be 300 to complete my current collection). The originals are far out of my league. Its interesting that you mention legalities, always a concern with these older models, does Autocraft's rights now supercede the other suppliers of reprints? EDIT: Or rather, are they the only legal source of reprints?

On a side note, your NOMADIC is beautiful! Thank you for seeing that project through! I hope there are many sales!

Kind Regards,

Cris

EDIT: Ah Ha! Here is a link to the Autocraft Micro "New" Models store front. I do remember that site now.

Hello Friends,

One of the joys of building models for me is researching information on the original subject matter. Here then, are a few pictures of the Ransomes & Rapier 5300 series 9 yard (about 9 cubic meter) bucket excavators. It looks to me as the paint scheme in several of the photos shows a black and green livery. I think I will attempt to reproduce this in my diorama.

About 13 of these units were built, most entering service in the late 1930's and retiring in the early 1960's.

All photos copyright their respective owners.

Best Regards,

Cris

Hello Friends,

After the Hobby-Model-Spiel, Mia and I decided to take a weekend trip to Berlin. So, finally after all of that (!) I managed to build the boom. Notice that the plan view has the more correct shape and layout of the boom. So I used the drawings to make new parts.

Best Regards,

Cris

Hi Cris,

I hope you could enjoy your trip to Berlin. The progress on your excavator is looking very fine to me.
I reckon you will build your next models only by glueing the assembly instructions to cardboard. ;)

What will be the final dimensions of the excavator?

Best regards,
Thomas

Hello Friends,

Some progress on the "Business End" of things.

Kind Regards,

Cris

@Thomas: Yes we had a wonderful time in this city with so much history. Thank you for your kind words. Quite effortlessly I frequently manage to stick both the cardboard AND the instructions to ME :) The model itself will measure about 11.5cm long by 6.5cm high by 3cm wide. The diorama will be just a little bigger.

Hi Cris,

Besides the usual wealth of nice details I find the colouring very appealing.
How do you manage to achieve this realistic impression, e.g. at the bucket?

Best regards,
Wolfgang

@Wolfgang: Thank you my friend for your kind comments! We will see if I ultimately escape this report unscathed :) The blended colors are pastels that I shave with my blade and apply sparingly. You can get different effects by wetting your brush with a bit of solvent. See the first picture.

Hi Cris,

Although rather tiny, this is simply GREAT ...! You created another work of art within almost no time at all.
Could you show us how small this model really is? The knife already offers an indication, though ...

Hi Chris!
Once again, I´m deeply impressed by one of Your masterpieces. At that, You always catch some kind of spirit in Your dioramas, that I much appreciate; they are miles away from being "just a model, standing in some landscape".

Hello Friends,

I was so overwhelmed with your kind words and interest! Vielen Dank! I think I am blushing :D . I also think all of you must need new glasses :) So a "little" more progress on completing the scene. I ended up with four (!) copies of the Hafen Diorama so I have used one of my fleet of LKW to fill in this small diorama. Next I will add some figures and it will be done. I have a rather long trip the next couple of days (Kuwait, Somalia, Qatar, Oman then back home to Schkeuditz) so we must have a baupause :(

Grateful Regards,

Cris

@Wolfgang: As you can see its about 13cm square. Not soooo tiny.
