Hallo

Hi Andi
One small correction to the "from 2014" version - I should have thought of the orientation of the solar panels before!
The "join in part 3" mark should be in a position 4 railing marks anti-clockwise. See picture. The solar panels should point south.
Again, I have corrected the master files for the model. Anyone buying the model from now on will get the corrected version. If anyone who has bought the model would like a replacement for sheet 1 (where the errors are) then send me a PM or an email and I will send the new sheet (at my cost).
Sorry for all the errors - I hope you still enjoyed making the models.
Best wishes
David
Hallo Andi.
I am sorry that you have had difficulties in building my Nab Tower lighthouse models - it was not my intention to cause you so many problems.
Regarding the model "Before 2014" - I have completely re-examined the model and found some problems, all caused by me. The model design was control-built so I don't know how these problems were not identified before.
There are the mistakes:-
1) The "hexagon" base (part 2) should have the "join in part 3" also labelled as "North". On all parts the "Join in part 3" also matches the North orientation.
2) The line showing where on part 2 the "join for part 3" should be is wrong - it should line up with the positions for the 2 outer supports (part 6). See the attached picture for a better explanation. The error is small but caused the problem you found with the support positions. You were correct to just "twist" your model and re-glue it to the base.
3) The marking on 16 for the "join in part 3" is 60 degrees too far clockwise. It should be in the red position shown in the picture. I have also marked how the overhang of part 17 fits. This will allow part 17 to be correctly oriented.
4) A minor fault, on part 2 (the "hexagon" base) the circled rectangle has no coloured fill - it should be green. The text next to the part should also read "green - fit 6 here" and "red - fit 7 here".
If all is built correctly the red light tower should be at the front (South-west) and the solar panels should point south.
I have corrected the master files for the model. Anyone buying the model from now on will get the corrected version. If anyone who has bought the model would like a replacement for sheet 2 (where the errors are) then send me a PM or an email and I will send the new sheet (at my cost).
I am still examining the "after 2014" model and will post separately with any problems I find.
Apologies again - I was not aware there were so many errors in the model.

Hi Nils, Ulrich
Lighthouse no 19 is Ie Shima (or Ie Sima depending on the transliteration). It was on Ie Shima island in Okinawa but destroyed in 1945. "Steam punk rocket" is a good description - and you can understand why I must build it! The current lighthouse on Ie Shima is not as interesting to look at
The model is number 249 of the 249 Japanese lighthouse models published by Tokokai at https://www.tokokai.org/lighthouse/paper11/
Note I worked on the model sheets in Corel Draw to get good colours/textures.
HMV Tegeler Plate was finished last night - photo soon. Which one next? The DSM Heligoland model is possible, but it also needs all the colours changing like the DSM Bremerhaven lighthouse model.

You are right - Alte Weser is the WHV not DSM one. How could I make that mistake

Hi Paul
Welcome to the list. You may need to define modern-ish - after 2000? After 1980? There are a number of ferry models around:
- I have the Apollo and Earl Granville in my range but both are 1970's designs - http://www.papershipwright.co.uk
- Cony modellbau has the Ms Mecklenburg-Vorpommern railway ferry 1996 - http://www.conysmodellbau.de/ he also has a number of older ferry models and some free ones
- Mondorfer Bastelbogen has a free model of a small Rhine car ferry - https://www.kallboys.de/mondorfer-bastelboegen?start=20
- GPM have the Polonia - https://sklep.gpm.pl/modele-ka…tki-cywilne/1/200/polonia
- HMV have re-published the Nils Holgerson/Peter Pan - https://www.kartonmodellbau.de…schiff-Nils-Holgersson/en
- Kartonwerft has a couple of modern ferries but she (Imogen) is taking a long break from selling models at the moment
There are older Wilhelmshaven/Moewe models around too new and second-hand - a couple of ferries are in that range too.
I also have a couple of simple Japanese models in my digital collection - Rainbow Love is one name I can remember.
There are others out there I am sure. Others will likely respond to fill the gaps in my list
Hope this helps
David
I am pleased to announce 2 new ship models - the ferry MV Earl Granville and the small buoy tender THV Alert. Both models are in 1:250 scale.
The THV Alert is a small buoy tender and rapid intervention vessel operated by Trinity House. She is based in Harwich and used to maintain aids to navigation and also assist in shipping emergencies in the English Channel and the south of the North Sea. The model comes on 2 sheets of A4 card and is about 16cm long when assembled.
The ferry Earl Granville was operated by the Sally line between Sweden and Finland - and then Sealink between Portsmouth and the Channel Islands. The model is the second of 3 unpublished models designed by Nils-Peter Jaechel and has been digitised and published by Paper Shipwright with full permission. The model is available as a (paid for) PDF download or a printed model. The standard model shows the Earl Granville in late Sealink colours (all white hull) - it is also available to special order in the original Viking/Sally Line red hull/white upper-works colour scheme and the earlier Sealink dark blue hull/white upper-works colour scheme. Contact me if you are interested in either of these versions.
Please see my website - Paper Shipwright - for more details and photographs

A quick preview of the coming Earl Granville model - the second of the series of Apollo-sisters models designed by Nils-Peter. Jaekel She was originally launched as the Viking 4.
I have finished my last control build (apart from flags and anchor chains) and wanted to show progress. The instructions need editing and some new diagrams. I intend to offer her in Nils-Peter's original Sealink (British Ferries) white hull livery and also in Sealink (British Rail) livery with a dark blue hull or as Viking 4 with the red/white hull.
The model was originally designed by Nils-Peter as a "conversion set" for the Apollo model - but I have created a complete set of model sheets for her, so no need to buy the Apollo model.
The third model, the Bolette (ex Viking 5) is still being converted from the hand-drawn sheets so will be some time yet.
Greetings
David

David

Just a quick correction - release date 23rd September (I travel to Australia for 2 weeks starting tomorrow - for my "real" work)
And a couple of pictures of my (nearly complete) last control build - navigation lights, anchor windlass and flags missing!
Greetings
David
Sehr geehrte Kartenmodeller
David

I am pleased to announce the release of the model of the Irish buoy tender (ILV Granuaile). It is available for purchase from my website - www.papershipwright.co.uk.
The model is in 1:250 scale and is printed on 7 A4 sheets. Full assembly diagrams and text is included.
The Granuaile was launched in 2000 and is operated by the Commissioners for Irish Lights (responsible for all aids to navigation round the coast of Ireland). Her home port is Dun Laoghaire.
For those who can't speak Irish, her name - Granuaile - is pronounced Graw-nja-wail. She is named after an Irish pirate princess whose name in English was Grace O'Malley. More information here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_O%27Malley

Dear all
Thank you for the kind wishes and thoughts for my good health and recovery. Yes I was in a crash - I was in the middle of 4 cars that collided when the first car decided we were all travelling too fast and that not moving at all was much safer. I stopped in time - but the car behind me hit me and pushed me into the car in front.
My car is very badly damaged but I have just got a sprained wrist - nothing broken. Today was spent with insurance, writing reports, getting a hire car, etc.
My worry now is about the two boxes of my models in the boot of my car - they are probably badly crushed. But they are only models and I can make them again if needed. No one died or was seriously hurt - it could have been much worse.
Best wishes
David

Some more pictures:
1. Original (not cfm reprint) Kranich Lenin model with my laser-cut railings and anchor-chains
2. Hartmut Reidermann (build in progress) showing the assembled crane jib
3. A set of laser-cut railings etc for Gunnar Sillen's (Bildrum.se) KBV coastguard vessel - a future build project for me. This has a single coat of grey primer.
4. Predes free Christmas model of the ferry Raasay with laser-cut railings and front gantry. Note I cut the black reinforcing grid under the ramp by hand!

Hi Andi
Spatial resolution is excellent - as long as the card is fixed to the base plate with tape you can cut very thin parts. I have settled on two cut lines 0.333mm apart for cutting railings (200gsm card) and the Emblaser will cut these without problems - and consistently, The Darkly Labs team say the effective resolution is 300dpi but I think it is a little better than that. You could probably cut railings with two lines 0.25mm apart but they will not be very stiff.
Two reasons to watch it while it is working:
- it's a laser and might cause a fire. The team recommend using a thick piece of card under the part being cut (a sacrificial base - you can see it in my picture, I use 1mm thick card) so there is a lot of inflammable material where the laser is pointing and a fault that stops the laser moving would be dangerous.
- there is a fan in the laser head (to cool it) that blows down onto the parts being cut out. Sometimes the cut parts (waste pieces) do not get properly blown clear and you sometimes need to halt the laser to remove them by hand.
It is actually a lot of fun (and safe) to watch it cutting out your creations - so this is not a big problem!
Regards
David
Sorry for posting in English - I hope people can understand.
Yes - I bought an Emblaser* from Darkly Labs (I bought the A4 size) and I am very, very pleased with it. I was able to buy a "September" delivery - but as with all Kickstarter projects there were delays and the Emblaser kit actually arrived in early January.
* = the original name of Laserblade was not possible to be registered worldwide so it is now called the Emblaser.
The kit was very straightforward to put together - the instructions are excellent and very clear. There are lots of diagrams so assembly for non-English speakers should be very easy. It took me 2-3 hours to assemble it. Software is included - Cut2D for developing vector-based cutting files and another package for engraving photographs (I have not used this).
As with any tool it takes some time to get good results - in particular it took me a while and some experimenting to realise how much the type of card and the colour of the card affects the cutting process. You can choose the power of the laser beam and the speed the head moves at - too slow and you get very burnt edges, too fast and it will not cut through. I am willing to share the cutting files I use for testing.
The low power of the LED laser means the materials it can cut are limited. I have cut 300gsm card without problems (coloured card cuts much better than white). I have cut 1mm cardboard but this requires 2 passes at full power and the edges end up very black. I do not think it will cut 2mm card. Also because of the wavelength of the laser beam it will not cut transparent (clear) plastic.
I am now able to get parts cut out with minimal "burnt" edges. I have got very good results cutting railings (2,3 and 4-bar), anchor chains (as small as 6 links per centimeter) and I have cut out a very nice crane jib for the Hartmut Redermann carne barge model. I am developing cutting files for steps and ladders (companionways) at the moment.
My Atlantic Shell model which I showed at Bremerhaven has my laser cut railings.
Pro's
- Being able to experiment without needing to send cutting files to a commercial cutting company
- being able to develop laser cut parts for my own models and not have to use standard sets
- Very good forum and very fast response to any questions or problems
- Price
Con's
- limits on the materials which can be cut
- speed of the cutting (an A5 sheet with 5 rows of railings takes 20 minutes). You must watch the cutter as it works.
- smell during cutting (need to use with good ventilation)
I am very pleased with the results and I will be cutting railings and other small parts for my models from now on. It is nearly as easy to use as a printer and I see it being a very useful tool.
Note that I do not think I can sell custom laser parts sets for Paper Shipwright kits - mostly becasue cutting the parts is slow.
I can post some more pictures if people want and I am happy to answer questions.
