My next model may seem rather odd choice. Merino has not the best graphic quality in town. However, the printing quality is good and the subject is (in my view) a very pretty one. Well, 507 parts is quite a lot to finish before 15/12/2007 but I'll try...
Today, I enclose a picture of the kit's cover and another of the kit itself. It looks like the kit has 24 pages of parts but one of them is of spare parts. In fact, there are 'only' 23. The picture is in low resolution, for obvious (or not so much...) reasons but you can already see that it is almost all grey and brown

Hello Ricardo,
Nice to see you putting your toe into the water! I've been eagerly awaiting your entry into the competition. I think you have made a wonderful choice.
As you know, Merino models do take quite a bit of care to build. But after having just completed Modelik's Od2 (P4.2), this one will fall into your hands with ease.
The Merino models have some shortcomings as you have mentioned, but they choose to model interesting Spanish castle and cathedral designs. Quite a nice change from some of the other mainstream publishers.
All the best with this model Ricardo.

Thanks for the post, John
The Od2 took me a lot more time than expected but I'm not complaining. At first, I was thinking about Schreiber's Petersdom but it has a little over 2000 parts I guess that 507 is already hard enough for one month...
The kit is divided into several main sections. The first one includes the façade and the towers. The method, as in the real thing, is to start at the bottom and finish at the top
I enclose two pictures that speak for themselves. In fact, a poor picture from below is often more revealing than a good one from above... -
Hello Ricardo !!!
Very nice decision =) to build this cathedral, it´s on my wish list.
i wish you an successful building 8)
Greeting´s
Kurt -
Thanks, Spitfire This one is far from easy...
I enclose pictures that show a typical case where card templates are a must to align the maaaany and closely spaced fold lines. -
The upper part of the towers (just below the tips) is tricky to build and that should be obvious by looking at the parts provided in the kit. How are they supposed to be glued to each other? Those 1mm x 1mm bits? Hmmm. I found it necessary to make a suitable base for the 8 surrounding parts and, then, glue together the small 1mm x 1mm bits. The base has three parts. The two on the right and a small circle for the tip.
-
Nicely done with these octagonal tower sections! Brilliant solution to very tricky assemblies.
John -
You can say tricky, John Same goes for the tower tips. They were built using the same model but the internal parts should be a little smaller...
-
The towers have a lot of buttresses, some of them with sharp ends.
Well, part A of the model is complete -
These two towers alone indicate just how difficult small intricate details can be to model with precision and crispness Ricardo. At this late date, to enter the competition with such a model would make most cringe. You step to the plate with aplomb.
Well done!
John -
hi ricardo!
very excellent work you are showing us. =D> I never would have come over these small parts.
hey, this reminds me on something..... :rotwerd:

....@) right, I have to finish my competion building! :gaga:

You are not alone, Thomas and 15/12 is approaching fast. Well, there are still two full weekends ahead...
The cathedral has a very pretty central section, with many parts. You can see that I discarded the tabs on the small cylinders and filled them with rolled thin paper. The last picture is just another case where a card template is very useful. -
The central part of the tower really requires card templates! I made two (top and bottom). The arrows are there because the part provided in the kit is not perfectly symmetric. Aligning everything eliminates a possible error source. The process of wrapping around the tower skin on the templates is both easy and fun
-
Merino has the very dubious habit of printing some parts across the fold line of double pages :(. This results in some very ugly and irregular wrinkles on those parts, sometimes with staple holes and loss of paper stiffness. The latter is easy to solve with a bit of card, as shown in the first picture.
I also changed the assembly method of some pointed decorations. Hopefully, the picture is self-explanatory... -
Parts C, D and E of the kit are very simple. They will be surrounded by others...
-
Time to start surrounding the cathedral with some interesting details. The slices for the small cupola are a bit too wide at the top (or too short). However, Merino provides a small circle for the top and that helps to fill the hole.
-
I had a nasty surprise on one of the big buildings - the rear wall proved to be over 2mm shorter than it should be. The method was to cut that wall and the upper part and insert bits of card to make up for the missing space. The roof needed some work, too...
-
It's a pleasure to watch this cathedral develop.
John -
It is developing rather fast but probably not fast enough, John
I'll be really hard-pressed to finish it in time.
Part R of the model is a pretty tower. As before, I changed the shape of the pointed decorations, from conical to pyramid. This takes advantage of printed detail to conceal the fold lines and gives a better finish. Well, at least comparing with the model's cover picture... -
Dear Ricardo,
this will become a very impressive model! So far very nice progress and interesting report.
I will keep my fingers crossed that you will finish on time.
Good luck,
Matthias
-
Me too, MHBS I hope to finish it in time and that means I will definitely not keep my fingers crossed
Any cathedral has a fair share of repetitive parts and this one in no exception to the rule -
The kink you can see in the last picture is, indeed, part of the model
-
Some more assemblies. The cathedral is 'just' the centre if a major complex!
-
The very last tower :yahoo:
The bad news is that there are 18 double flying buttresses to build and they take some time -
Good luck for the buttresses! So far your model looks great. Hope you can make it.
I keep my fingers crossed,
Matthias
-
It is a done deal, Matthias! I finished it yesterday :yahoo: The problem is that I arrive at home at night. No broad daylight pictures until Saturday. Well, hopefully, my camera will be able to take some decent shots in the meantime...
