One of the newer Shipyard kits, that includes two models.. Santa Maria & "Niña".. As the "Niña" is the simpler of the two, I decided to go with this first. Both of these kits have excellent graphics compared to earlier Shipyard kits that I've seen.. Pictures show the cover, plus frames and bulkheads cut out and then glued up, and the deck pieces glued to 1mm stock..
1/96 "Niña" from Shipyard

Great stuff!
groetjes,

Have added the deck that will be seen when the cargo hatch is opened.. Boxed it in with black stock so the frames would not show..
-
Have cut out and added the main deck.. So far no problems. Pictures show the deck glued, and the deck below from the cargo hatch..
-
Time to start laying the first planking. Hard to tell in the first photo, but I've sanded and beveled deck and frames to where it feels smooth and flush. 2nd photo shows the parts, and the in 3rd photo I have started..
-
Have finished the first layer of planking below the deck line, and the light sanding to take out any high spots...
-
Here I thought of a way of getting my windows to have the "leaded glass" look that was on the printed part.. Used mesh from a sack that was holding some sort of veggie.. Cut to shape.. glued on the back.. painted gunmetal, and then coated with "Kristal Klear".. Came out better than I thought it would IMO.. Sort of getting ahead of myself on the build, but wanted to try this while the idea was fresh..
-
Now that's a neat idea! Good one.
Cheers

Back to work on this.. Have set the pieces for the keel in place, plus the upper first layer of planking. You can also see where I've sanded the hull to take out any humps before I start gluing up the outside planks...
-
This will be interesting! I've always had a soft spot for the Santa Maria. And the scale 1:96, lies temptingly close to 1:87...

Hello eatcrow2,
nice and clean build so far! Is this the one where you have to build things from wood, textil and so on? Or is this the simpler one?
Thanks a lot

DaliborHello Dalibor..
Thank you for the comments.. I do not know if there is a "simpler" one, but in this model they give you templates for the mast..spars.., and sails which you have to make yourself out of wood and fabric.Cheers..

Have started the planking.. pic #1 shows the planks laminated on .05mm. pic #2 showing the inner bulwarks glued.. Nice to see something with color going on..

Hi Peter. This model looks like a lot of fun. Nice work!

Have added the inner cabin bulkheads and doors..
-
Have added the upper deck (quarterdeck ?) This was glued on 1m card. I said before that my planking was glued on 1m, when it was actually done on .05m.

Figured I would get the base ready so I would have something to set the model on while working.. Glued the base together, and then sanded smooth.
I applied a coat of paint, and then sanded smooth again. For the finish, I used a coat of "Liquitex" Dark Umber.. when dry, I gave it a coat of "Future".. let that dry, and then a light buffing with a piece of silk, and then one more coat of Future for a nice semi-gloss finish.. -
Nice - looks like wood! I'm happy to see I'm not the only one getting high on Future
Cheers,
Oliver

Oliver.. Thanks for the comments. Yes, "Future" is my cure all for everything...;-)
These next set of pictures show the stern pieces added to the rear. All touch ups done with oil pastels.

Hello Jörg...
No I did not.. Time will tell on whether that was a smart move I think if the spacing between bulkheads/ribs was wider, it would be more of a problem. I plan on using paper shims on places where a cupping might occur.
Cheers.

I've started laying the outside planks. Shimming with thin pieces of card if I feel that I'm getting a cupping between frames. Also beveling the next set of planks where it will butt to the bottom of the row before it. It will give me a tighter joint, especially as the pieces start to curve down the hull.
-
Have finished the outside planking.. You can see in some of the photos where I have use card shims to flush up to the ajoining piece where needed. All gaps were filled in with oil pastels, and then rubbed with a soft cloth to blend in with the planking..
-
Hello Peter,
very nice work ,the curve of the planks fits good and by the way the whole ship... =D>
