Roman Ddetyna and Ron Burns over at the Cardmodels.net site have a large ship competition going with the prize being a redesigned Digital Navy USS Arizona.

After looking at the various kit ships being entered I thought to try something a little different. Rather than having to double post everything I'll just put the link in here and for progress reports and one can just follow the bouncing ball as they used to say in the Melody Tunes

Nachdem ich mir angesehen habe, welche Schiffe sonst noch am Wettbewerb teilnehmen, habe ich mich entschlossen etwas anderes zu machen. Ich will nicht alles zweimal schreiben, also stelle ich hier einfach den Link hinein, ihr könnt dann dem Baufortschritt folgen.

The model is based on the Arsenal Ship proposals put forth by the United States Navy in the '80s and '90s. The design is a combinatiion of various artist conceptions and some ideas I had sketched up at one time with the idea of doing the build eventually

Das Modell basiert auf den Vorschlägen für ein "Arsenal Ship" (Versorger), dass in den 80er und 90er Jahren von der Navy entwickelt wurde. Das Design ist eine Kombination verschiedener künstlerischer Darstellungen und einiger Ideen, die ich mal aufgezeichnet hatte, als ich mit dem Gedanken spielte irgendwann einmal das Schiff zu bauen.

Am trying the foam filled egg crate on this even though I intend to still skin the hull hull in paper. I can pick up sheets of .6mm stock for free about 55cm long. I feel using this will keep the hull seams to a minimum. Hopefully I will post some pics here as well as at Ron's site but I have to figure out the attachment system here.

Ich versuche die Baumethode "schaumgefüllter Eierkarton" bei diesem Modell. Der Rumpf wird aber trotzdem in Papier beplankt. Ich kann ca. 55cm lange Papierstreifen (0,6mm dick) umsonst bekommen.

Ich glaube, das wird die Nahtstellen minimal halten. Ich werde hier auch Bilder einstellen, genau wie bei Ron's Website aber ich muß noch herausfinden, wie man das hier macht

Wie gesagt, versuche ich den Rumpf mit der geringsten möglichen Anzahl an Teilen zu beplanken. Das erste Teil geht zwischen Spant 8 und 27.

Was busy skinning the bow last night. As this is scratch built the hull skin is being done by the trial and tribulation method of fitting. After I am done with the model I will most likely take the time to Learn an unwrapping program. I just don't have the time right now. I did have some fitting problems in the bow area nothing that a little filler can't fix though. I'm not really sure if I would try this method again as far as the skinning material goes. My goal here is to get the look of a modern welded or composite material hull with it's seamless looking construction. Like most things sometimes the problems that creep up are something that needs to be solved one step at a time. Fo rthe most part I was able to get a reasonable fit between sections except in the lower radius of the hull where it is curving in two directions at once.

Habe mich gestern mit der Beplankung des Bugs beschäftigt. Weil dies ein Scratch-Bau ist, wird dies nach der Trial und Error-Methode gemacht. Wenn ich mit diesem Schiff fertig bin, werde ich mich vielleicht mit einem Konstruktionsprogramm beschäftigen, aber jetzt habe ich keine Zeit dafür.

Ich hatte ein paar Paßprobleme - aber nichts das ein wenig Füller nicht beheben könnte. Ich weiss nicht wirklich, ob ich dieses Material für die Beplankung nochmal verwenden würde... Ich versuche, den modernen, nahtlosen Look eines Rumpfes aus Verbundwerkstoffen darzustellen.

Wie üblich, tauchen die Probleme nach und nach auf unten müssen Stück für Stück gelöst werden. Meistens konnte ich eine brauchbare Passung erreichen, bis auf die Teile des Rumpfes, wo es Krümmungen in beide Richtungen gleichzeitig gibt.

Finished skinning the hull and sealed it last night. Those of you who may of seen the thread on this build at the Cardmodels.net site most likely have caught some of the comments i have made regarding lessons learned on this. The material I used for the skin was .6mm chipboard. Would I use it again? Probably not for a ship unless the curvatures were all relatively benign. The foam filled egg crate is something I would most definetely do again. One thing I think it would very useful for is either wooden hulled vessels that are done in the planking method or early rivited iron or steel ships with their overlaping plates. After sealing the chipboard does sand well though. Now its time to finish prepping the hull for painting. Normally I would not go to all this trouble but one reason I do this hobby is to try new things (new to me at any rate ). The only thing I wish I had done is to shoot holes for the display stand and for some bow thrusters. I'm thinking the bow thruster I will have to use some sort of core drill while the the display stand holes I think I will have to use what we in the Staes call a Fostners Bit.

Letzte Nacht bin ich mit der Beplankung fertig geworden und habe den Rumpf versiegelt. Falls ihr den Thread auf cardmodels.net verfolgt, werdet ihr über das Gelernte aus dieser Aktion Bescheid wissen. Das verwendete Material war 0.6mm Pappe. Würde ich es nochmal verwenden? Wahrscheinlich nicht, es sei denn die Rumpfkurven wären relativ gleichmäßig. Die Schaumgefüllte Wabenkonstruktion würde ich sicherlich wieder verwenden. Ich denke, dieses Verfahren könnte hilfreich für hölzerne Rümpfe sein, die beplankt werden oder für frühe Stahlrümpfe, die aus einzelnen Platten genietet werden. Nach der Versiegelung kann man die Pappe gut schleifen. Jetzt ist es Zeit, den Rumpf für die Lackierung vorzubereiten. Normalerweise würde ich mir diese Mühen nicht machen, aber ein Grund für dieses Hobby ist, dass ich neue Dinge ausprobieren kann (zumindest für mich neu...). Das Einzige, was ich vorher gemacht haben sollte, ist Löcher für den Ständer und das Bugstrahlruder zu machen. Ich werde einen Bohrer für die Ständer-Löcher und einen Fostner-Bohrer für das Bugstrahlruder verwenden.

Have the hull almost ready to prime and finish. Just one little hole to finish fixing . From the attachment you can see that very little of the filler material is left. Maybe 1% of the total applied. The filler used goes on very smooth and has the consistancy of wipped cream or egg white

Der Rumpf ist fast fertig für die Grundierung und Lackierung. Nur noch ein kleines Loch. Auf dem Bild kann man sehen, das nur sehr wenig vom Füller übriggebliebenist - Vielleicht 1% der aufgetragenen Menge. Der Füller, den ich verwende, läßt sich leicht auftragen und hat die Konsistenz von Schlagsahne bzw. Eiweiß.

Hull is in the paint shop . Now I can start on the fun stuff tomorrow. Still haven't made up my mind as whether or not to use conventional screws and rudder or go with azmipods (?) like those used on the newer cruise ships. The azmipods would certainly help set this apart

Der Rumpf ist in der Lackiererei. Jetzt kann ich morgen mit dem spaßigen Teil anfangen. Ich habe mich immer noch nicht entschieden, ob ich konventionelle Schrauben und Ruder verwenden oder Azipods wie auf modernen Kreuzfahrtschiffen nehmen soll. Azipods würden dieses Modell sicher zu etwas besonderem machen.

Starting to look like a ship. Upper framing is motly in place, just needs a few re-enforcing pieces on the joints between the spines

Es fängt an wie ein Schiff auszusehen. Das obere Spantengerüst ist größtenteils eingebaut, nur einige Verstärkungsteile an den Verbindungsstellen der Längsspanten fehlen noch

Sorry for the long delay on this. In the past year I went through a terminal illness with my wife and modeling took a very distant back seat. Took the model off of the shelf the other day to try and get my head back into the build process. Hope to have new pics up soon
