Panama Canal mit der SLOMAN ALSTERTOR / HMV - Eigenbau / 1:250

Hello Friends,

I wish to make a diorama with the SLOMAN ALSTERTOR. I think these reefers made by Howalt Deutsch Werft in 1967/68 (coincidentally the same year I was "launched down the slipway") were some of the most elegant cargo vessels ever designed. I found some months ago an account by a former crew member who lists many interesting ports of call. Naturally, I first wanted to recreate Hamburger Hafen in this era. But, after pondering awhile I may choose a Far East or South American port. Hence the strange thread title at this point.

EDIT: Thanks to the suggestion of Der Betreiber, I have settled on showing the SLOMAN ALSTERTOR transiting the Panama Canal. According to Herr Kreuzer, she made this passage in 1970 as part of her Worldwide cruise.

The SLOMAN ALSTERTOR and her sister the SLOMAN ALSTERPARK were the last two vessels of this design produced. The SLOMAN ALSTERTOR was broken up around 1994.

EDIT: Thanks friends for your suggestions and assistance! I would ask the members for any preferences in regards to ports and to provide pictures or links if at all possible.

I will begin construction shortly. At 58cm I may need a larger mat :)

Kind Regards,

Cris

Having played "Ports of Call" for some Years now, I think, Buenos Aires might be interesting, though I have no idea, how this port looked like in the past. In the game it´s an interesting collection of some small bassins , connected by a small canal, lots of opportunities to show different vessels of all sizes close togehter. And a few meters to the south, there ends this river riachuelo, that seems to be rich in traffic, though poor in nature left...
Ist das schon Glühwein, oder hast Du bloß das Bier draußen gelassen?

Hallo Friends!

@Heiner und Robi: South America does sound like a good idea, Even just one 1:250 palm tree :). And the Canal..Brilliant! That would solve a lot of my problems.

I was leaning toward Japan and specifically Tokyo, but this canal idea has me excited! Hmmm, I wonder about the Suez Canal?

Thanks my Brothers!

Hi Everyone!

@ Robi: Those are great! They seem to be similar to the Japanese flowers I posted sometime ago Table Garden

@Tobias: Well as lovely as your last vessel was, I can only assume your ALSTERTOR is glorious!

Hello Friends,

Having finished up my little Star Trek display, and cleared my mat of any stray Warp Nacelles or Shuttlecraft, I am finally ready to lay the keel. However, here are some interesting links regarding the Panama Canal.

A very kind Flickr user has agreed to let me share her photos of her transit through the Canal in 1968 Panama Canal 1967-1968. I will certainly show more of these later.

Here is an historic account of the building of the Canal.

Kind Regards,

Cris

Hi Cris,
what a wonderfull idea to built this ship together with some panamascene. I never knew there are palmtrees to build in cardboard. Years ago I build some out of korean fir needles. But they have lost colour.
Good luck .
With the best regards
Ulrich

Hello Friends,

Progress on the hull framing.

Kind Regards,

Cris

@Ulrich: Yes, of all of the ideas Hamburg, Tokyo, Buenos Aires etc. I like the Canal Transit the best. I hope to make a very interesting diorama. I was very pleased when I found the pictures of the Canal from that era along with an account by a crew member. I also found those flowers and trees fascinating!

Hi Cris,
a great idea to build that ship and include her in such a diorama.
I by myself have passed the canal on board of MS CELEBRITY INFINITY in 2010 and took quite a lot of photos especially when being in the locks. If you are interested in some or the other - don't hesitate to ask for.
Be shure - I will have a sharp look at your report!
Kind regards
Kurt

Hello Friends,

The framing og the hull is complete and work has started on the decking.

Piet or Henning: Thank you both for such a lovely ship! But could either of you tell a little about part 34a circled in red below? Is it a customs hatch? This area and the funnel are the only two areas that the PEKARI and the SLOMAN ALSTERTOR seem to differ. Are there others? And lastly, do you think these changes were due to the production process or by request of the owner?

Kind Regards,

Cris

@Kurt: Thank you my friend! I think we would all be interested in any photos you care to share!

Hello Friends,

The decking is complete. The last picture shows the hull in its (probably!) last beautiful state :)

The Faber Castell PITT Artists pens Cold Grey III number 232 is a good match for the blue grey deck color.

Kind Regards,

Cris

Hello Friends,

Some progress on the hull. The PITT Artist pen Chromium Green Opaque number 174 is a good match for the green portion of the hull.

Hi Cris,
Your picture of the stern shows me You' re a very brave modellist. I would not dare to finsh the stern that way because I have no opportunity to correct the proper fitting later on.
Respect, respect.
With best regards

Hi Ulrich,

brave = stupid :) But it seemed to me after test fitting numerous times it was better to work with only four hull segments rather than six. I am by no means an expert.

Hello Cris !

If you prefer to first assemble the outer walls of the hull, why don´t you do it completely, so that you have a ring of bow, side-walls and stern and then put the inner structure of the hull inside this ring? I fear you might have problems fitting your shoes in a midship position.

Hallo Cris,

Merry Christmas Friends!

I hope all of you have a wonderful time with family and friends! I am sorry I do not have any progress to show you, the last few weeks have been consumed by work (by my rough calculations in the last month I have flown some 250,000Km) and a nasty flu bug. I hope to resume the lovely SLOMAN ALSTERTOR before the New Year begins. Thank you all for your kind words and advice.

One other small update, after much phone calls and problems of every kind, the Wonderwire is finally on its way to Schkeuditz! I will open a thread in the "Offers" section when I finally have it in my hands.

Thanks my friends and fellow members for another wonderful year of discussion, friendship and paper!

Cheerful Regards,

Cris

Hi Friends,

I was just thinking that maybe some of you are a little bit sad that all of the snow went away for Christmas, I know I am (a little bit!) so here a couple of pictures I took while on a layover in Bishkek Kyrgyzstan a couple of days ago -32C in the daytime!!!! Thats my poor 767 in the first picture. The second shows the "heated" pool at my hotel in downtown Bishkek.

Cris

Hi Chris,
nice idea, the panama canal diarama.
We are just underway with our sailing boat, staying at Portobelo, Panama.
I went through the P.C. some weeks ago and took several photos.
Look here: http://www.sy-schiwa.de/fotos/2012-karibik-iii/panama-kanal/
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

Manfred
