Beijing Drum Tower - Stahlhart Papercraft - 1:300 [FERTIG]

Started a new build yesterday, the Beijing Drum Tower. It is a free download from Stahlhart Papercraft and the link is here

There are 20 sheet (A4) and 41 sheets of instructions.
Total parts 252.
Size of the finished model is 48 x 34 cm.
Printed out the sheets on 176 gsm cover stock.
Scale 1:300

Started with the doors in the lower level. Total of eight recessed doors. Cut the doors out bigger to give more room to glue the tabs. Also left larger tabs
than the original.

A support structure is added to the center after the outside walls are built as well as a decorative border.

Hi All,

Next the first of 3 roofs. Discovered there was an error with the parts numbering here. Parts 20 and 21 on the instruction sheet should be 16 and 17. Caused a bit of confusion at first.

First thing is to glue the roof edge to the unprinted side of the roof base (top).
The ends have tiny tabs which I found out are not really needed. Next roof I'll make the tabs larger which will help with the glueing. The roof slant up at the corners which is not an easy thing to get done.

Parts 16 and 17 go on the bottom of the roof as a decorative ceiling.

Check the instruction drawings carefully before glueing to make sure the right part is in the right place. It gets complicated or may be it's just me.

1st roof is finished and installed. Started on the 2nd floor, the Drum Room.

The model has lots of colorful details.

Hi All,

Finally had some time to do some more building.

Had to make 24 columns with attached bars on both sides. Columns with bars attached were then glued to the base. Top was later glued on, which turned out to be a bit of a problem to get the tops of the columns aligned with the base for the second roof.

Hi All,

Another installment.

The Drum Tower now is complete with all the roofs.
Both roofs are first constructed before they are then glued to the original structure.
Finally starting to master the upturned lift at each corner of the roofs.

I'm sure that if there were another four or five more roofs to build, I'll finally get it right.
Then again, I think three roofs are more than enough.

Starting now on the Courtyard and surrounding walls and buildings.

Hi All,

Some more progress from over the weekend. The main building is now complete and started on the courtyard and buildings.

The base is glued to a hard artboard. I added cardboard to the base structure to add strength. The inside walls also have cardboard added.

Next started on the walls and stairs for the main building.

Next are a series of small buildings surrounding the main structure.

Next are the South and North gates.

The East and West gates and walls are still left to build to complete the model.

One Note: Part 233 (roof for one of the buildings) is missing all the tabs. I cut the tabs, but the other roof part on the same sheet can be copied and used.

Hi All,

Here are the final photos of the Drum Tower complex.

This model has been a learning experience. If I were to build it again, a thinner card stock would have been better for some of the parts, especially the surrounding buildings and gates.

All in all this was a enjoyable model to build and a great learning experience. I know mistakes exist, but I'm happy with the final outcome.

Thanks, yes this was a fun model to build. The only problem was those upturned corners on the roofs. By the third roof I started to get the hang of it. If Stahlhart designs any more Chinese buildings, I'll make sure to build those as well.
