Hi romanmodels
I've started to build this amazing model myself
Your build thread is very informative and helpful.
Especially I like your method for track assemblig. I think i'll be using it too
Did you continue the build from February? -
Hi Snake 7 been slack in updateing here so will do it now. hope you are haveing fun doing the sherman my addvice is do the tracks first thay are a killer and make the wire rods for the track 1 mm longer.
Next is the mesh screen the goes on the back of the tank, I used some
square laser cut sheet the mesh the card edging part I had to trim down a
bit as it was too wide to fit in the opening on the back of the Hull
the tank.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small346.jpg]
The auxiliary generator exhaust and the oil drain been fitted through the mesh which has been fixed to the back of the tank.

And part 14 the oil tank made up.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small353.jpg] -
got the rail tranporter for the karl gerat at
christmas and was looking through it and making it in my head, when my
sister came over and said she would rather clean the toilet and muck out
the ponies than make a paper model, I replied that I'd rather do a
paper model than clean the toilet and muck out the ponies!
Some more progress parts 15 the oil cooler.

Part 26 support brackets? Also fixed in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small369.jpg]
Breaking
the part sequence to start making and fixing the parts that fixed to
the base of the Hull starting with the drive shaft cover.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small370.jpg]What
the designer missed maybe thinks it's covered in with the boxes on the
hull of the tank is the main generator for the electrics and is driven
by a belt of the drive shaft some Sherman tanks had these fitted behind
the drivers seat. on others it was fitted just in front of the firewall
so here is my attempt wasn't sure what the generator would look like so
I painted the top of the drive shaft cover to look as if there was a
break in it with what looks like a belt in that break and just made the
cover for the generator.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small371.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small373.jpg]
the cover is just dry fited for now, that's all for now. -
Next update starting on the interior fittings
first off large storage locker and on top of that storage for 50 cal ammunition boxes, locker for the two water jerry cans.

All the parts dry fitted in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small391.jpg]
I
got some lead wire off eBay see what it was like and it was good stuff
really easy to bend to shape compaired the brass wire.but not as good as
brass where you need a long straight length. but I used it to make two
conduits to the back of the instrument panel. I've added these in as an
extra. That's all till next week -
A small update from last weekend glued the
instrument panel in place and then made up and fitted small container
and next to it and electrical junction box not sure if this is in the
right place as I have seen this fitted behind the instrument panel on
the sponson side. Also a bracket.I also shortened the cover that goes
over generator.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small392.jpg]
Made up the 14 machine-gun ammunition cases.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small393.jpg]
12 fitted in their racks on top of the stowage lockers.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small394.jpg] -
This weekend update starts off with two portable fire extinguishers very
straightforward apart from the petals but then they always are bit
tricky I cut them out with the blade at an angle so I undercut the backs
and this seems to make them lie together better, I then wet them inside
and out with the edge colour wash. bend over a former so all sit
together nicely and then when they have dried apply some glue to the
inside seems to work nicely for me.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small395.jpg]
Then made a holder for one of the fire extinguishers this sits in the vacant forward gunners position.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small396.jpg]The
two fixed fire extinguishers for the engine Bay next these will a bit
fiddly as I fixed the mounting straps to the brackets hold them to the
side first, whereas I should have fixed the straps round the fire
extinguishers and then to the mounting brackets.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small397.jpg]
the
extinguishers fixed into place, they sit either side of one of the
little cones on the base of the Hull I had to remove this to glue the
extinguishers in place and then I reglued it back in place a little
further forward. then glued in the pipes.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small398.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small399.jpg]
Next came the the regulators for the generator and auxiliary generator.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small400.jpg]
Regulators fixed in place. The kit doesn't have the wiring to these but I'm going to add it in.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small401.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small402.jpg]
Next
up 2 ammunition chests the 17 pounder rounds, these might be water
filled. And they sit in the left-hand side from on sits right over the
escape Hatch in the bottom of the Hull.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small403.jpg]
And to finish off the wallet for the instruction manual fixed to the side of the forward ammunition chest.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small404.jpg] -
First up is the battery box.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small405.jpg]
Pudding invited herself up for some closer supervision of the modelling.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small406.jpg]
Battery
box glued in place and I've added in some extra wiring connecting the
battery box to the regulators. The generator and the auxiliary generator
Regulators.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small407.jpg]
Next on the parts is the first of three types of the 17 pounder ammunition
various parts the shell is made up
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small409.jpg]
The completed shells
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small410.jpg] -
Well progress has been a bit slow, with the continuation of the ammo
another 14 rounds off 2 different types. I haven't enjoyed doing ammo
the petals are quite small and fiddly to do, to get them looking good
and I found it was hard to get all the parts fit together so that they
were nice and symmetrical however much I trimed them and and altered
there positions I couldn't quite get them right.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small411.jpg]
Next
was the ammunition box that takes place of the codriver after making
the box up I had to trim the flange on the base of the shelsl so that
they would fit through the holes in the top of the ammo box.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small412.jpg]
A view inside the ammo box showing the short tubes that help hold the shells in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small413.jpg]
The
ammo box full shells the instructions show the two shorter shells
contained in this box and the high velocity armour piercing shells in
the next box but I decided to put in 3 of the high velocity armour
piercing ones near as well.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small414.jpg]
Next
ammo box is ready the ammo box with the shells angled for ease of
access. As you can see from the picture in the instructions the tubes
that hold the shells come up to about the end of the shell casing which
is 22 mm in length. the parts to be rolled up to form the tubes are 10
mill too long being the length of the shell. These i cut down so they
matched the tubes shown in the instructions.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small415.jpg]
The completed ready ammo box.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small416.jpg]
The ammo boxes and fire extinguisher all glued into the base of the tank hull.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small417.jpg]
that's all for now enjoy watching. -
This instalment starts with part 61 and angled
plate that sits over the battery box and as a bracket for some ammo and
box storage
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small418.jpg]
Part 61 and some storage boxes 62
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small419.jpg]
Part 61 with the storage boxes 62 and the ammunition boxes fitted.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small420.jpg]
Part 61 fixed in place in the hull of the tank.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small421.jpg]
Now
the fun part the driver's the office base plate part 63 with the
brackets hold the levers and pedals. Plus I think the clutch pedal part
64.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small422.jpg]
Part 65 either break or accelerator pedal.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small423.jpg]
Part 65 in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small424.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small425.jpg]
All
the Hull interior parts apart from the driver's office of all been
glued in place in the foreground of the picture you can see I have made a
start on the steering levers part 66 which I hoped to finish this
afternoon but after the family Sunday lunch I was sprung with a surprise
job of fixing together of a kennel for my nieces sheepdog puppy which
she got as an early birthday present she's been nagging or one for a
couple of years now. So part 66 will be continued next week. -
Another update the steering arms in the first picture.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small426.jpg]
Drivers floor plate with guides for the steering arms fitted.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small427.jpg]
Several
pictures of the steering arms fitted the drivers floor plate in place
as well this is quite difficult as you have to fit the steering arms in
first and then glue the floor plate in place. This was difficult with
the guides for the steering arms already fixed in place on the floor
plate, future reference room else is best to put these in afterwards.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small428.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small429.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small430.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small432.jpg]
Next three pictures show the drivers floor plate glued in place on the linkage from the clutch pedal the fixed in place as well.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small433.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small434.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small435.jpg]
Pedestal for the seat.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small436.jpg] -
The smallish update today
assembled the base of the seat fixed on the pedestal and the support for the back.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small437.jpg]
The back fix to the seat.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small438.jpg]
Seat fixed in position.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small440.jpg]
Next up was throttle lever shown here fixed in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small439.jpg]
And
that is the end all the equipment and fittings into the lower part of
the Hull, apart from the gearbox and transmission which will come up
shortly.
But for the moment construction moves to the rear of the Hull.
Which starts off with the making of the rear doors to the engine compartment.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small441.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small442.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small443.jpg]
That's it till next week. -
Well build continues with the construction of the hinges for the rear engine doors.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small444.jpg]
I first glued the hinges to the doors and as you can see in the picture I then glued them in place on the back of the tank.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small445.jpg]
While the glue was driving on the door hinges I made up 2 of the rear towing brackets.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small446.jpg]
The
next three pictures show the towing brackets glued in place and show
off the movable hinges I was really pleased how well they came out I
have to stop myself opening and closing them.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small447.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small448.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small449.jpg]
Next I made up two more towing brackets that are angled and sit below, the rear track tensioning wheel mounting brackets .
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small450.jpg]
Brackets glued in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small451.jpg]
Next
moving on to the mounting bracket for the rear track sprocket and
tensioner. First picture started building them up, I really enjoyed
making these.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small452.jpg]
The completed mounting brackets.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small453.jpg]
That's all for the moment. -
well we continue with the tensioners.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small454.jpg]
The tensioning nuts added.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small455.jpg]
And fixed to the mounting brackets that were made last week.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small456.jpg]
And fixed in place on the tank.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small457.jpg]
Just had to jump ahead and make the small spanner that is used to adjust the tensioners.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small458.jpg]
And here it is in use.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small459.jpg]
The
metal strips the fixed down the side of the doors and the mounting
brackets the towing hook. Which the kit doesn't come with so I might
scratch build one it seems as a towing hook fixed to a spring the fixes
into the mounting brackets either side of the doors.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small460.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small461.jpg]
Strips
and brackets fixed in place on the back of the tank till brackets have
mounted higher as the didn't seem to be enough room the lower block on
each mounting bracket should be level with the tensioning adjusting that
but as you can see in the picture would be enough room to get the
spanner in.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small462.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small463.jpg]
Next are the inner sides beside the exhaust pipes.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small464.jpg]
Here they are fixed in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small466.jpg]
The parts make up the louers below the exhaust pipes.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small465.jpg]
With one of the ends in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small467.jpg]
assembled up with the crossbars in.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small468.jpg]
And a view from the back.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small469.jpg]
Covered over with a curved the Sheet the inner face is coloured green.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small470.jpg]
Next
is moving onto the transmission and gearbox assemblies. the last
picture shows laser cut parts that make up the inner skeleton.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small471.jpg]
Nothing like leaving you on a knife edge till next week -
On with the progress glued up the various laser cut parts to form the transmission unit.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small474.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small473.jpg]

[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small477.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small478.jpg]Next
two pictures show the main skin of the transmission unit with the
fixing bolts printed along the top with a slightly darker strip printed
to show the slightly raised front on this the kit and has the bolts
added on top but looking at pictures the transmission on the Internet
these later costings and the bolts recessed so they were more protected
so I decided to go off piste and improve if that is possible of this bit
of Halinsky's kit .
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small479.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small480.jpg]I
cut the printed bolts off an alternative skin hole punched out the
bolts on the skin I'm going to use and also an extra strip. This extra
hole punch strip was glued on top the strip with the printed bolts on, I
then chamfered the front edge and turning the strips over, I chamfered
the back so the top edge was thinner and front edge. I also chamfered
the top of the skeleton assembly as well.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small481.jpg]Here is the altered skin with a now raised front edge and recessed bolts.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small482.jpg]Side and front skins fitted to the skeleton.

Made up the covers for the final drive assembly.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small490.jpg]And here they are fixed in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small491.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small492.jpg]Next
the side pieces this final drive assembly of dry fitting with these in
the skins go around the front I did fix an extra half mil thick piece of
card onto the side pieces so that I could fit and then glue them onto
the skeleton rather than just been glued on their edge.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small493.jpg]The

And here's the next update continuing with the gearbox I'm not going to
say much about this assembly, and will just let the pictures do that. no
issues with fit all and just added some nuts to the final end casing.

[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small529.jpg]The
only slight quibble I have with the kit is where parts are made up
double thickness by cutting out a box scoring down the centre and
glueing the mirror printed part together most of the time this works
pretty well as can be seen on the gear lever above occasionally it
doesn't and in this case the wasn't any printed detail on both sides so
the other half could have just been left is blank weathered colour.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small530.jpg]The
next stage was fixing the transmission unit in place as well as the
gearbox and transmission casing dry fitted well. The next bit was tricky
as I had to fit the universal joint end back onto the brass Rod that
forms the drive shaft as it was all fixed into the gearbox this was
finally achieved another dry fit with the transmission casing to make
sure that fitted with the gearbox okay which it did. This could all be
glued up so applied glued to the transmission casing and pushed it into
place or rather try to. I think the glue turned to push fit into an
interference fit and took quite a bit of pushing to get it fully in to
place. Then I just had job of glueing the gearbox in place with the rage
on the top of the gearbox facing upwards had a tendency to tilt towards
the drivers seat but as you can see it worked out ok.

With that section finished it was onto the top plate so won't be long before that nice interior detail will be covered up.
First
up was to cut the outside of the top plate out and glue it to shape
than the thickening pieces added to the inside and then the inside skins
were added this process was repeated for the sides and the rear plate.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small538.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small539.jpg]Final

the edges and the machine-gun hole hardened with ca glue and when dry
chamfered to shape.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small540.jpg] -
The next update from last weekend and today starts off with a grill in
front of the radiator this was tricky as it consists of 11 rods that fit
into holes that are only the thickness of the paper and even with some
ca glue it was just too fragile to do good job so as I hope you can see
in the pictures I cut a strip of spare colour a millimetre wide and
working from the inside glued it with the green on the outside, I could
then glue the rods in place and then using another millimetre wide strip
only from an interior better spare colour did this to the inside the
scene the two pictures I think it worked out well.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small541.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small542.jpg]Next
up was glueing all the tank plate pieces together. Got a bit carried

ring before remembering to take some pictures.

in the following pictures as you can see from the last post it looks a
lot better glued down than been removable.

-
When it's on with running gear now we start off
with the stub axles for the drive sprockets. Stub axles under
construction the two cones were a bit of a tight fit.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small584.jpg]The completed stub axles.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small585.jpg]And mounted on the tank.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small586.jpg]Next
up are the drive sprockets as you can see in the photograph you get two
options a plane sprocket or one with some casting detail on it
unfortunately the sprocket with the casting detail on the mainly used by
Ford on most Shermans they produced, so I went for the plane ones and
as you'll see in later pictures I use a fat end of the taper pin and
placed it over the inner cut out on the sprocket and then gave it a
hammer this made an indent on the edge of the cut out so it resembles
the cast sprocket used by Chrysler.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small587.jpg]The
plane sprockets with all the circular parts cut out using the hole
punch, and as you can see have experimented the taper pin round the
outside of one of the sprockets.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small588.jpg]All the sprockets cut out and punched.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small589.jpg]All
the parts that make up the sprockets except for the nuts which are the
wrong ones. The centre of the sprocket made up of three tubes one inside
the other I found the when I glued the middle tube than the inner one
is too big the outer tube to fit over so I fitted it over the inner tube
without glueing it and then it fitted into the outer tube that I glued
the ends up.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small590.jpg]Central tubes glued into the inner sprocket ring.

They seem to be linked to ukpapermodels.com, which is currently not available...Edit: Now it works... Words fail me

Thanks for updating.
Yes' I've started with hull, to feel the paper and to see how it's assembling.
Now I turned to tracks, as you suggested.Your building report is very very helpful. Thank you for describing it so in details!
Keep up the excellent work! -
thanks Henni and Igor

Next up are the sprocket axles.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small595.jpg]Glued in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small596.jpg]That
completes the sprocket and next we move on to the rear tensioner
wheels. I made up a jig to ensure that the laser cut discs are lined up
with the centre hole.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small597.jpg]Central hub glued in place as well as the side pieces.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small598.jpg]The
tensioning wheel parts I found that I needed to file up the outside of
the laser cut discs, as the inner ring for the outside of the wheel
would not meet up to start with, if the ends don't meet up then the
outside strip which I glued up into a ring with not fit over the inner
one I also just glued round a small strip on one side so that it
wouldn't dry before I pushed the outer ring in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small599.jpg]that's all for now may be another update tomorrow night on Monday.
-
This update starts the 600th picture am I going overboard on pictures?
And continues with the idler wheels. I use the ring mandrel again
sliding the ring up the mandrel to it was round and then sliding the
side ring up to it I then glued the two together and added the
strengthening strip I then went round and made sure that everything was
glued up nicely and then slipped the assembly off.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small600.jpg]These rings are glued in place to complete the tyre part of the wheel.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small601.jpg]Next
up was glueing the spokes in place which I thought would be a bit of a
nightmare they weren't too bad I started off by giving the smaller outer
part of the spoke first and then just trimmed longer in a better spoke
to fit and included in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small602.jpg]The central wheel bosses glued in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small603.jpg]Next to the offset axles so that the tracks can be tensioned, two parts to make up the axle.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small604.jpg]Two parts stuck together.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small605.jpg]The axles mounted in the idler wheels.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small606.jpg]Might
get some modelling done this weekend but in a weak brained moment I
volunteered to decorate my parents 50th wedding anniversary cake so that
comes first. And then I've got another nine days off digging next
Saturday so you'll have to wait a bit for a fix. -
Well first up decorating the cake sent me
nutty, the next bit of suspension was to make up the fixing flanges the
road wheel carriages as you can see it involve cutting out a lot of
nuts. It says to glue these to the hull next, but I think I'll wait
until I've made the carriages.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small607.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small608.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small609.jpg]I
then had nine days off doing some archaeology which mainly involved
digging a section through a Bronze Age ditch, quite an impressive feat
seeing about 4000 years ago the only had wooden and stone tools. The
very top of the ditch is cut into Hill wash the darker band on either
side is a prehistoric soil and very compacted overlying green sand and
then finally the bottom chalk, the ditch is 1 m 40cm metres deep which
in English is 4' 8". Anyway that's enough archaeology backed the Sherman
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small611.jpg]Next to do are the fixing arms for the road wheel parts 241 in the instructions.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small616.jpg]Hear are all the parts to cut out.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small610.jpg]Partway through punching out the holes.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small612.jpg]All
the holes punched,The only slight niggal I had was that the parts in
the green tub with laser cut discs but they didn't laser cut the hole in
the middle it was a bit tricky punching out the hole in the centre as
there wasn't very much to hold of the discs.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small613.jpg]Parts 241 cut out.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small614.jpg]Parts 241a, inside face cut out.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small615.jpg]I
used 2 taper pins to align the two faces when I was glueing together
this was a bit fiddly so I push the taper pins through some corrugated
card the correct distance and then continued glueing the parts together.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small617.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small618.jpg]

Next update from the last two weeks
and actually tried the tracks on the Sherman so I fitted one on and this is what it looks like.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small621.jpg]Carrying on assembling parts 241 by adding 241b
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small622.jpg]Then adding 241c
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small623.jpg]Assembled parts 241d and e.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small624.jpg]Glued the inside of the edging strip 241g.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small625.jpg]Glued the parts 241d and e in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small626.jpg]Then glued on 241h the outer face of the edging strip.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small627.jpg]Then glued part 241f in place.

Next is part 242 the spring arm? I lost enthusiasm after cutting out
the holes, plus some DIY caused a pause in construction, but I picked
up again this weekend. First picture is the the parts that make up part
242 the holes punched out.[Blocked Image: http://www.papermodelers.com/forum/images/statusicon/wol_error.gif]This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 800x761.

Good you found your enthusiasm back on that extraordinary model!
-
really impressive work!!!
i enjloy following your build -
Thanks Josve and Henni.
Was doing some decorating yesterday, so I only had today to get my paper modelling fix. Here is the update.
Fitted the inner sides of the bottom flanges part 242e.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small643.jpg]Then fitted part 242 f which is a strip round the outside of the arms.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small644.jpg]Then fitted the two outer skins to the centre one on each side part 242f.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small645.jpg]That's it till the next update.
-
On with the update, finish off the arms with the covers for the rubber blocks on the ends, parts 242g.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small646.jpg]Now
we move onto part 243 the base plate for the springs and the arms that I
just made it on to these. The picture shows the components make up this
part.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small647.jpg]The base part 243 , with the two side pieces 243a , and the two laser cut formers the central mounting 243b.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small648.jpg]Part243d glued in place in the centre.

Was able to have a good bash at the model so a big update.
I added the edge strips part 244c .
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small650.jpg]I then rolled up the parts for the central axle part 244f these are left loose.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small651.jpg]Next I did part 244e the stubs to hold the springs.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small652.jpg]I then did a little extra and added a disc on the base for the bottoms of the stubs rather than the printed version.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small653.jpg]Next
was making up the springs these need to be rolled with a spiral, I
think I rolled each one twice as it wanting to roll parallel which is
typical continue try to roll something parallel it always roles in a
spiral. But anyway I think it worked out well, and there part 245.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small654.jpg]I
then glued the springs onto part 244. I put a small bit glue on the end
of the outer coil folded the next inner coil and then push the spring
over onto the stubs put a bit glue on to hold them in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small655.jpg]Then
it was onto making up part 246 the plate in the top of the bogey
chassis with two locating rings, for the top of the springs to sit in. I
rolled and glued up the inner ring and then made a bit of a jig to sit
this ring on so I could glue the outer strip round its outside.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small656.jpg]The completed plates part 246.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small657.jpg]The parts 247 that make up the back plate the bogey chassis.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small658.jpg]Next
photos show the various parts of247 been laminated together then some
you pieces glued into the top as you can see this back plate is quite
thick.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small659.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small660.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small661.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small662.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small663.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small664.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small665.jpg]The
two parts that make up 248 the front plate the bogey chassis as you can
see this is a lot thinner, part 248a top needs to be chamfered.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small666.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small667.jpg]Parts247 and 246 glued together there are printed on these parts small locating lines at their centres.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small668.jpg]I then glued parts 248 to the laser cut parts 249 then glued part 250 reinforcing ring for the centre hole.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small669.jpg]The fronts and the backs glued together.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small670.jpg]That's it for now.

Well not much progress made this week. When
fitting the skins which are part 252 I found that the two side pieces
one fixed very strongly so I inserted some 1.5 mil card in the gap
between the top of the bottom as can be seen in the picture.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small671.jpg]I
then found that the skins wouldn't fit properly and looking at it
closely the laser cut part which is 249 is the correct size the part
with the two round rings takes the top of the springs 246 is about half a
mill too big so before fully assembling 246 it is best cutting it the
same size as the laser cut part 249. Probably best to remove a bit from
each side so you don't lose the centre registration marks. Two left on one right carriage with the skins fixed in place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small672.jpg]That's all for now.
-
I finish covering the other 3.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small673.jpg]Fitted laser cut part 252a.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small674.jpg]Then added part 252b a covering strip on the bottom edges.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small675.jpg]I then added part 252c a covering skin over part252a.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small676.jpg]I then added the ribs 252e to the fronts.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small677.jpg]I painted all the edges and then fixed part 251 in place ready to assemble up the suspension arms.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small678.jpg]The
springs and arms fixed in place I did find out to trim the sides of the
spring base plates so that they were free to move in the casting.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small680.jpg]Next
I added the road wheel suspension arms I did need to trim the black
spacer between the two arms to allow free movement of the arms. These
went together reasonably well but a bit of patience is required to get
the holes all nicely lined up so the pins can be fixed in place easily I
did find it help just filing around one end of the metal pins to make
it easier to push on through into place.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small681.jpg]I then fixed part252d in place to cover up the brass pins.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small682.jpg]Part 252f was added to either side of the front to add the sloping sides starting to look like the real thing now.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small683.jpg]The last element of 252 is 252g some nuts along the base.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small684.jpg]Moving on now to part 253 the bracket casting that supports the return roller.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small685.jpg]That's
all for now hope you all had a good Christmas and you will got the
right paper models you wanted, some of mine are between here in Poland. -
A bit of a belated update. I did the laser cut
discs that form the skeleton of the road wheels I did just need to
file the centre holds out slightly so they would fit on the central
boss.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small696.jpg]Before
adding the two strips that go to form the outside of the road wheel I
just needed to run the file round the outside of the laser cut discs
till the inner strip fitted nicely.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small697.jpg]The outer strip added starting to look like some wheels now.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small698.jpg]Now
it started to disappointingly go downhill the inner flange that forms
the outside of the metal part of the road wheel whether rubber ties fitt
round is made up of free strips of card. Having had no fitted issues,
and with everything going together so well I started off and glued up a
strip into a circle.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small699.jpg]The
fun came when I tryed to glue the middle strip round the inner one and
it was too small. I then cut out the parts form the side of the rubber
wheels and glued those up and then made a jig that I could wrap the
flange strips round so that they were the right size!
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small700.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small701.jpg]Only some where a little bit small but a bit of triming and the flanges did glue in all right though.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small702.jpg]
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small703.jpg]I
then had to trim and fit the side discs of the metal part of the hub so
they glued within the diameter of the flange. Otherwise road wheel
would be to wide to fit in this chassis if I'd glued the flange assembly
on top of the side discs.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small704.jpg]That's it for now got the nice little job of cutting out all the small bits that form the spokes.

Update from last Sunday
finished off the lights
nice little bit of petal work the designer drew up the parts so that
there was an extra bit to roll up into a tube line the petals then to be
folded over and glued into shape and then the extra bits cut off when
the glue dried. I painted the inside with some aluminium paint as well
is to the nail heads which I then glued inside as the light bulbs I then
cut out the centre of the light fronts and replaced it was clear
plastic.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small725.jpg]I then made up light guards.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small726.jpg]And then the racks to carry the spare track treads.
[Blocked Image: http://www.ukpapermodels.com/albums/albums/userpics/10009/small727.jpg]That's it for now
sorry mist out an update
